"The paradox of defending movesets"

#PokemonGO: When we talk about defender movesets we make the assumption that best defending DPS = best at defending gym. In the strange world of Pokemon Go, this is simply not true.I have found that defender movesets do little for defending gym. If someone wants to take down your gym, a strong defender might make him waste an extra potion but that's about it. He won't stop attacking just because he found out your Snorlax has Zen Headbutt. However, when it comes to prestiging, the defender moveset matters slightly more. The battles take longer and every CP difference matters. A strong defender is going deter your own team more than the enemy team. On top of that, a well defended gym will be prestiged many times over before it is torn down in one fell swoop. That means over the life of the gym, the majority of DPS dished out by defenders will be against their own team!So forget defending movesets. Your Pokemon's ability to defend comes down to:High CP:Besides giving you a good place in the gym, high CP Pokemon will attract other high level players to train up the gym and put their high CP Pokemon in. Therefore, if you have 2 of the same Pokemon, pick the one with the higher CP not the one with the better defending moveset.Ease of prestiging (if near the bottom):I live in a big city where you need to get into a level 10 gym to have hope of holding a gym for more than a few hours.Using a weak defender like Gary rather than Blissey at the bottom of the gym will help the gym build prestige.TLDR: The paradox is that strong defenders hinder friendly prestigers more than it hinders enemy attackers. Because prestging is key to defending the gym, a good moveset is actually bad for defending the gym.Edit: cleaned up some points after feedback via /r/TheSilphRoad http://ift.tt/2mrNvxC
