"Alolan Marowak has a more regional real life inspiration."

I sort of am astounded by how much other pokemon based around folklore and regional culture get analyzed and noticed for mythological influence, but I haven't seen anyone say it about alolan Marowak. he's inspired by the traditional Kupua in Hawaiian and Mauri folklore, Maui. in mythology Maui commits the theft of fire to give humans and his family fire for cooking and light and other uses, hence the fire typing. And his fish hook is made from half of one of his ancestor's jawbone, specifically an ancestor who is half dead and half alive, and Maui has myths involving dying trying to gain and bring immortality to the world's mortal beings, hence the ghost typing. it's a pretty overt and cool inspiration for the pokemon's alolan form. via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/2PjpqGM
