"The Pokémon Crystal Mobile Adapter DLC!"

Most of you Pokémon fans out there may have heard of this in some manner, but many probably don't know the whole story. When Pokémon Crystal version came out in Japan in late 2000, Nintendo was already experimenting with a device that allowed the Game Boy to access the internet via a mobile phone. Yes! In 2000!The Mobile Adapter GB was a dongle that attached to a wide variety of J-phones, allowing cell data to connect Game Boy to Game Boy. For Pokémon, this was a big deal. Pokémon Crystal could allow peer to peer battles from afar, a trade system akin to the modern GTS, and even supported the download of DLC news segments. There were 12 DLC news segments in all, and while the first one has been moderately accessable and translated, the others are seemingly lost to player accounts and remnant data. Why? Because the Mobile Adapter GB performed horribly, and the satellite company DION shut their service down shortly after the concept took flight. One of these news segments was notable as the one that gave Japanese players the GS Ball item, the only way to legitimately get the rare Pokémon Celebi. The same treatment wouldn't be seen in the western world until Crystal's release on the 3DS virtual console. However, using remnant data and accounts from a handful of Japanese players, we worked hard to bring the lost news segments back to light. This is not 100% accurate (obviously these are translated) and needs a lot of work.A caring group of people started the REON project to attempt to being the peer to peer mobile functions back to life using custom servers and carts. The research into the news segments continues, and maybe one day, we can see them in their complete form! Many were quizzes and games, most with a rare item prize at the end. Take a look at our blurb on the mobile adapter as we explore its functions!https://youtu.be/y9jTUtn4Y0QEvery Pokémon Ever Ep. 55 via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/GQlZa9h
