"Before they disappear, let's all remember how terrible HM's are."
It's been a general consensus that HM's are an annoying relic of either a fake good idea, or lazy level design. Fortunately, with the revelation of PokéRide, it seems we're finally about to see the end of this system. As a farewell nod to these awful things, I suggest we all share our stories and find some of the moments at which HM's were the most annoying things on earth.I'll start with a classic. In the second generation, there is a cave called the Dragon's Den. It's an aquatic cave filled at 90% with lvl 10 Magikarps. To enter it, you need to have defeated Clair, the last Gym Leader of Johto, otherwise an old man will deny you access. Now, the cave is small, and really more of a plot point than an actual dungeon. But for some reason, the designers decided to add a little something to annoy the players. They put a whirlpool in the middle of the cave.I started the series with Ruby, which makes a good job as using HMs as progression gates. You need Rock Smash to exit Mauville, you need Surf to reach Fortree and so on. But the whirlpool in the Dragon's Den is fantastic because it is absolutely useless. It's the one and only use of Whirlpool outside of the Whirl Islands, which means you probably had to teach the move to one of your pokémon for that exact occasion (unless you played Silver and went to the Whirl Islands first to get Lugia). In my case, I even had to backtrack to get a poliwag. It's amazingly annoying, it's a crime against level design, and it somehow made it into the remakes. WHY. via /r/pokemon http://ift.tt/2d5PWCH
