"Can't throw a ball far enough to hit a Golbat"

#PokemonGO: I've tried everything that I've seen suggested. Tried the L throw. Tried changing the pointer speed (Android) in the settings. Tried turning AR on and off. My phone doesn't have a gyro so I can't turn AR on and tilt my phone to have the pokemon at the bottom of the screen. I even tried forcing Go to landscape to see of that would help, but nothing worked.Obviously I'm not concerned about catching a Golbat, but if I come across a Lapras or Dragonite then this is going to be a real issue.
