By viewing them in the Pokedex, it downloads the models so that you won't have to do it as you encounter them on the go.I figured this out because I recently had to reinstall the game on my phone. My data limit for the month was already reached, which meant that my internet speeds were severely throttled. When I tried playing Pokemon Go, Pokemon would load on the map, but they would essentially be invisible. The faint circle would load indicating where a Pokemon was supposed to be, but there was nothing there and I couldn't click anything. If I waited long enough, eventually a Pokemon would load.
