"Cloyster and Tangela: very potion efficient prestigers"

#PokemonGO: I’ve been toying around with the simulator used by /u/paisleymon in his CP efficiency analysis, and I’ve been focusing on potion efficiency. The simulations below suggest that Cloyster is an overlooked prestiger with great potion efficiency versus many of the common top gym defenders in the current meta (Snorlax, Rhydon, Dragonite, and Exeggutor), and Tangela is very respectable as well. In particular, Cloysters with Frost Breath/Blizzard, Frost Breath/Hydro Pump, and Tangela with Vine Whip/Power Whip should be the core of your prestiging team if you want to save on potions while prestiging. This probably won’t help the urban players with a lot of Pokestops and potions much, but the urban and suburban players with few Pokestops around should benefit from a potion efficient prestiging strategy.Let’s start with a pretty standard matchup: prestiging versus Rhydon. In a baseline Vaporeon vs. Rhydon (2876 CP, 15/15/15, Level 31, Mud Slap/Earthquake) matchup, the simulator sees Hydro Pump as about equal as Aqua Tail if you prestige conservatively: dodge every move that you can and save long duration charge attacks for after the Rhydon’s Earthquake, with the battles ending in equal time but the Hydro Pump Vaporeon carrying over more energy to the next battle. Aqua Tail can be used between quick attacks, but even if used frequently, it does little more additional damage compared to just spamming Water Gun in this matchup. So, I compared the performance of other Hydro Pump users versus Rhydon, with Tangela included as a grass move representative. In these simulations, the potion efficiency of Cloyster stood out, likely because of its extremely high defense statistic (sort by Defense Stat). It took 14 less damage than the equivalent CP Blastoise, the 2nd most potion efficient water prestiger and took 38 less damage than the Vaporeon. Frost Breath is super effective against Rhydon because of ground’s weakness to ice, so the lack of Water Gun doesn’t handicap Cloyster too much. Tangela also stood out, suffering just a couple more damage than the Cloyster and killing the Rhydon up to 10 seconds more quickly.Unlike Tangela, I hadn’t heard much about Cloyster as a prestiger, so I tried it in a couple of other matchups where it could shine. Because of Dragonite’s double weakness to ice, Cloyster (Frost Breath/Blizzard) can be the most potion efficient choice against Dragonite (3070 CP, 15/15/15, Level 30, Steel Wing/Dragon Pulse), but surprisingly Tentacruel and Seadra with Blizzard follow closely behind. Also, the difference between having Blizzard and Hydro Pump on the Cloyster is rather minimal, despite the water resistance of the Dragonite.Cloyster with Blizzard also did well against Exeggutor (2500 CP, 15/15/15, Level 30, Confusion/Psychic). The bug types that you would think would be favored given Exeggutor’s double weakness to their attacks take over 20 more damage than Cloyster, and Exeggutor’s single weakness to ice is sufficient for Cloyster to win quite efficiently. The simulator doesn’t have a lot of moves for Gen 2 Pokemon, but it does have Bite for Umbreon, which has a nice defensive statistic. Even without a special attack, Umbreon’s potion efficiency rivals Cloysters, so it is a prestiger to watch. But what about Snorlax? It turns out that even if the Snorlax has the dreaded set of defensive moves (2492 CP, 15/15/15, level 26, Zen Headbutt/Body Slam), a Cloyster can beat a Snorlax with over double its CP with Frost Breath and Blizzard or Hydro Pump, and it appears to be the most potion efficient prestiger out of the matchups I could think of where the prestiger won. Tangela again performs very well and carries over a greater percentage of its HP to the next battle than Cloyster. Omastar with its partial Rock typing resists the damage from Body Slam and thus performs well overall. What do these simulations imply about potion efficient prestigers in Gen 2? Look for prestigers with very high defense statistics, like Steelix, Skarmory, Mantine, Umbreon, and Forretress, especially if they get good moves.Keep in mind that I’m only looking at a few simulations in this analysis: the exact matchups that you could face in the wild could yield very different results, and ideally, I’d like to look at the average and variation in the results from a vast number of simulations against different CP and movesets. But these initial simulations look very favorable for Cloyster. Also, if you don’t dodge well or value revives more than potions, you’d probably want to look at tougher prestigers, like Wigglytuff and Vaporeon. There’s also the possibility that other prestigers are more potion efficient. I didn’t nearly exhaust all possible combinations of prestigers with different movesets, so if you find a better matchup, feel free to mention it in the comments. Also, if you’re wondering about Gyarados, I didn’t complete that analysis, but Electrode seemed more potion efficient than Cloyster and Tangela in the few simulations I tried, and there could be better alternatives. via /r/TheSilphRoad http://ift.tt/2jXZzpf
