"[Data] Biome research: water pokemon that tend to spawn a little bit inland"

#PokemonGO: Hi, I’m from Hong Kong. This is the first time I post some data here, so forgive me if I have made some mistakes. I just want to bring up some discussion and want to know if there are anything similar in other parts of the world.I started recording spawns near my home since 10th January, after the starter event. Data are from 13 spawn points in northwestern Hong Kong which can be divided into two major groups. Here I call them as ‘common’ biome spawn points (9 spawn points) and ‘river’ biome spawn points (4). The river biome spawn points are all located along the river near my home, while the common biome spawn points are all a bit farther away but within 200 m from the river. Data were extracted either from a local third party map tracker or when I catch a pokemon from these spawn points. Data were recorded manually. Obviously it is impossible to record all the spawns (because I need to do something else). However, data were recorded IF AND ONLY IF I sit in front of my computer to check the third party map or to catch pokemon. Pokemon caught/seen in the past (> 15 min ago) according to my memory were not recorded. In this way, my data is not biased towards the rares.Since there are only 15 to 35 data recorded from each spawn point, I just put all the data from different spawn points together in their respective groups to give some preliminary results. So the data here does not account for the differences between individual spawn points. Here are my data:Common biome spawn points (total count = 237 from 9 spawn points)PokemonCount%Pidgey4016.88%Zubat2510.55%Spearow145.91%Ekans145.91%Krabby135.49%Staryu114.64%Goldeen104.22%Jigglypuff93.80%Golbat93.80%Meowth72.95%Horsea72.95%Sandshrew62.53%Venonat62.53%Poliwag62.53%Nidoran F62.53%Caterpie52.11%Machop52.11%Eevee52.11%Nidoran M41.69%Paras41.69%Weedle31.27%Mankey31.27%Cubone31.27%Squirtle20.84%Rattata20.84%Diglett20.84%Growlithe20.84%Tentacool20.84%Geodude20.84%Pidgeotto10.42%Parasect10.42%Psyduck10.42%Poliwhirl10.42%Bellsprout10.42%Graveler10.42%Grimer10.42%Koffing10.42%Magmar10.42%Kabuto10.42%River biome spawn points (total count = 117 from 4 spawn points)PokemonCount%Magikarp4336.75%Psyduck4135.04%Slowpoke2017.09%Dratini54.27%Tentacruel21.71%Golduck10.85%Tentacool10.85%Goldeen10.85%Seaking10.85%Staryu10.85%Starmie10.85%Some observations:As expected, pidgey dominates the common biome spawns near my home. This is followed by Zubat. For other commons please refer to the table above.Rattata and weedle are not common here.A wide variety of pokemon can spawn in this 'common' biome at a chance of < 1%.Magikarp, psyduck and slowpoke dominate the river biome spawns near my home. These three altogether contribute 89% of the total spawns.Unlike previous reports of ‘water biomes’, goldeen, staryu and poliwag are quite rare in my river biomes (only one goldeen and one staryu were recorded here in my data).Interestingly, these water type pokemon contributes significantly to the common biome spawns, with staryu (4.64%), goldeen (4.22%) and poliwag (2.53%), as well as others such as krabby (5.49%) and horsea (2.95%). This means that the ‘common’ biome near my home spawns a water type pokemon ~20% of the time.Notable spawns (according to my memory only, so they are not included in the data above):‘Common’ biome: Chansey spawned at least 3 times here before December. Magikarp, psyduck, and dratini occasionally spawn here (one psyduck was recorded in the data above).‘River’ biome: Omanyte and kabuto occasionaly appear and most of them spawn in the river biome spawn points along the river. Other rares include omastar, kabutops, vaporeon, gyarados and dragonair. So are there any similar biomes in other parts of the world?TL,DR: The most interesting finding here is that near my home, staryu, goldeen and poliwag belong to a different biome from magikarp, psyduck and slowpoke, unlike previous reports. Some water pokemon (staryu, goldeen, poliwag, krabby and horsea) tend to spawn a little bit inland together with other commons (pidgey, zubat, ekans, spearow).Edit: Minor text fixes after finding a typo in my spreadsheet which makes Nidoran F not counted. via /r/TheSilphRoad http://ift.tt/2j5Hw1T
