"Why Mimikyu is my new favourite Sun/Moon Pokemon"

Mimikyu is an interesting Pokemon. Nobody knows what it really looks like, because it's always covered in its Pikachu disguise. All we know is that anyone who sees its true appearance becomes afflicted with a mysterious but severe illness. In addition, despite its looks, it's a fast Physical attacker, and a pretty damn good one at that. So why do I like it so much? Well...It's a Fairy-type. But while most Fairies in the Pokemon world are cute, pink, and generally harmless, Mimikyu is different. It's closer to to the terrifying creatures in Ye Olde Faerie Tales, and especially since I'm a big fan of Grimm's fairy tales, it's a breath of fresh air that GF is acknowledging that not all fairies are sweet. Its concept and design are among the most original we've seen. Despite being a literal Pikachu ripoff, I think it's very clever. Mimikyu just wants to be loved, but unintentionally curses everyone who sees it. So what does it do? It pretends to be something that people do love. And who is that Pokemon that it disguises itself as? Pikachu, of course! It breaks the fourth wall in a way, since while Pikachu is massively popular IRL (being the one Pokemon that pretty much everyone in the world knows), I don't remember it ever being that relevant in-game.It can learn Thunderbolt and Thunder. This is just such a cute detail - Mimikyu wants to be Pikachu so badly that it even copies the electric mouse's most well-known attacks. It's really fun to use competitively. Give it Swords Dance, Shadow Claw, Play Rough, and Shadow Sneak, EV it in Attack and Speed, and slap on a Life Orb, and you've got one of the most reliable sweepers in the game. Disguise lets it get a Swords Dance up literally every time (barring stuff like multi-hit moves), and even though it doesn't quite break the big 100 for Speed, Shadow Sneak means it can clean up once its team members have punched a few holes. It made Splash hilariously viable. "Magikarp used Splash. But nothing happened!" This is text that every Pokemon player has seen at some point in their lives. We all know Splash. That move that pretty much only exists to showcase how pitiful Magikarp is. But now that Z-moves are a thing, Splash Mimikyu is an actual threat because of its ability to get to +3 in a single turn. True, it's not optimal because Life Orb + Swords Dance does more damage and doesn't use the Z move, but if you ever want a laugh, you can watch Mimikyu get +3 Attack and then unleash its FULL FORCE Z-SPLASH... where it gets to flop around with a cool aura.It was my saviour in the Battle Tree. I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed, but Sun and Moon's Battle Tree is way more difficult than the Maison. The AI has gotten noticeably smarter with predicting moves, and it now has access to Mega Evolution and Z-Moves. In previous runs, I had a tough time getting past the 10th battle, even with competitively bred, EV Trained Pokemon. Then I bred Mimikyu, originally just for my collection, and decided to train it because why not. It ended up singlehandedly sweeping the first 10 battles. It also massively helped with my blood pressure, since I don't have to worry about a surprise coverage move OHKOing it while it sets up Swords Dance. It reversed a common trend in which a Pokemon is hyped and built up during the speculation period, but then when the games are released it turns out to just be a gimmick. Mimikyu, however, is the opposite: Many players (including myself) dismissed it as a cheap gimmick when it was officially revealed, only to realize that it's actually very strong on the battlefield. It just goes to show that just like you can't judge a book by its cover, you can't judge a ghost by its Pikachu disguise. via /r/pokemon http://ift.tt/2hIUS3l
