"Walking distance computation is worse than ever"

#PokemonGO: I think it works by fixed sequences, like 500 meters. For instance if you walk 499m and stop for a while (e.g. you hit home) you are fucked, this will never be counted. On top of that, it seems to count barely 1/3 of what I really walk. My daily commute is precisely 1.7km. I barely get 600m out of it, sometimes a bit more, sometimes less. This is not understandable, they use Google Maps for god sakes, the dumbest GPS app can compute traveled distances accurately and live, wtf Niantic ?
