"What is the trick to getting distance while minimized?"

#PokemonGO: I never really had a firm grasp on this trick and I'm looking to get rid of the randomness. For those who don't know you can go to the egg screen and minimize the app, go somewhere (regardless of speed), and when you come back into the app you will sometimes get some distance.But it's finicky. I often do the same routes (mainly driving to the gas station before work) and I'll either get around 0.7 or nothing. It always starts from my house, so it's never a result of getting the "too fast" thing before I minimize the app. I also don't think it's a result of speed.I think it's timing. But what is the nuance? Does the minimize+trip+maximize all have to take place within one "update period"? The opposite? I'd appreciate any clarification.
