"[Discussion] Defensive Movesets - Pointless relic of the past"
#PokemonGO: Hello Travelers!I just evolved my 97% IV Psyduck hoping for Water Gun/Hydro Pump and of course it got one of the "best defending" movesets - Confusion/Ice Beam. This was the final factor which made me to make this thread and say it aloud: Defensive movesets are POINTLESS feature on 90% of Pokemon species. Oh, so you wanted to power up some niche attacker/prestiger with good IVs and use it just for fun (like said Golduck)? Too bad, it has only one good attacking moveset so good luck with getting it. This is so common on these mid-tier species, Pidgeot, Noctowl, Tentacruel and so on. Of course, one may say "Who cares for these weaklings?" Well, I care and I'm sure I'm not alone. In the past, when Gym defenders' diversity was much bigger, getting defensive moves had its benefits. Hypno, Exeggutor, Poliwrath and others were defensive beasts which occupied many Gym spots below few powerhouses like Dragonite and Snorlax. Many defensive moves still looked really weird, all these Twister, Bulldoze, Steel Wing etc stuff which often felt just like a loss in RNG lottery, not like a second prize, but others had some usability to surprise the attacker. These days situation changed and even on top tier Pokemon defensive movesets don't matter much. The only thing that matters is high CP and if defending Dragonite has f.ex. Steel Wing it will be only an issue for lower CP prestiger with Ice type. Unlike Dragonite though, defensive movesets on weaker Pokemon makes it simply USELESS. They would be awesome if every Pokemon could reach 3000CP and stay on high spot in Gym but as for now, these movesets are relic of the past, a system which lost its purpose as the playerbase grew and got stronger. You can get perfect defensive moves countering Super Effective attacker and your 2000CP defender - which will obviously stay on the lowest spot in Gym - will be destroyed in seconds by mediocre Snorlax or Vaporeon.I've read about Niantic's plan to implement species limit per Gym, but this won't change the fact that low CP Pokemon aren't defenders anymore! Gym game will change into a race, who will put top 5-6 Pokemon in first and who wants to be kicked out after adding something like Golem or Flareon.Anyway, I don't know if planned Gym overhaul will turn the battle scene upside down, increase the amount of Pokemon viable in Gyms or render some which are good now useless in the future, but there should be some way to help Pokemon with CP cap around 2000-2200 which are often fan favourites but can't be used due to only few or one good movesets. Moves training connected to buddy walking, heart scales, TMs, move teaching mini games, anything which will let players have fun saving these poor creatures from oblivion by teaching them useful moves. It has to be time consuming to let players feel that they accomplished something with extra effort. As for benefit for Niantic - more viable Pokemon = more Stardust spent on powering them up = bigger incentive to play, catch, hatch eggs and collect heaps of dust. Simple!I'd like to hear if you find defensive movesets still useful or are your thoughts are similar to mine. To add last thing - I live in small town and CP power creep reached Gyms even here.TL;DR: Defensive movesets are pointless system nowadays as majority of species can't be classified as defenders anymore so we should get a new system including features affecting move to let more Pokemon shine in Gym battles. via /r/TheSilphRoad http://ift.tt/2qzNRHO
