"Theory: The position of Champion is appointed"

I think the position of Champion isn't one you battle for, but one that's appointed when the current one retires or leaves the position. This explains why you aren't treated as the Champion from Gen I-VI, and also explains how Iris and Alder became Champions. There is one hole in the theory, in that Blue became Kanto's champion fairly quickly. My guess was that Kanto was missing a Champion at the time and Blue was the first to snag the position.Perhaps getting into the Hall of Fame increases your odds of being picked as well.
