"Analysis: Gym Meta after the Update"

#PokemonGO: This is an analysis of 100 gyms in my city of Mainz (Germany, pop. ~250k), which covers the entire Northern half of the city incl. the main suburbs. A snapshot at 2.30pm on a Tuesday.GYM DEFENDERSPlayers here are still trying to place their best defenders in gyms, you will find the occasional oddball like Xatu, Hat Pikachu or a Baby Pokémon, but nothing in this data suggests that players do no longer care what they put in gyms. The frequently discussed theory that most people would want their mons to return after some eight hours so they get their coins, so they put some junk mons in... well, it is not happening here. None of the 100 gyms had a single defender from the pidgey or rattata families. The Top Defenders here are Snorlax and Vaporeon which are both in 60% of all gyms, counting them all including those that only have one or two defenders. Completing the Top 5 are Blissey, Gyarados and Rhydon with about 40% each. Dragonite is in 27% of all gyms, followed by Exeggutor and Tyranitar at 17%. Everything else is currently in no more than one in nine gyms.GymsDefender(s)60Snorlax60Vaporeon43Rhydon41Gyarados40Blissey29Dragonite17Exeggutor17Tyranitar12Espeon, Flareon, Kingler11Lapras10Ursaring9Arcanine, Venusaur8Golem7Omastar6Donphan, Jolteon, Slowbro5Alakazam, CloysterI've also looked a the first placed defenders, the Pokémon players choose to put into a newly conquered gym. Here, Blissey takes the lead; 50% of all Blisseys in gyms were placed as the first defender, compared to only ~25% of Snorlaxes, Dragonites and Vaporeons and 16% of Rhydons. Clearly, if people would have access to more Blisseys it would take the lead in the most placed defenders table above.GymsFirst Placed Defender(s)20Blissey17Snorlax15Vaporeon9Gyarados7Dragonite7RhydonTEAMSMainz is like so many other cities Mystic territory. Mystic is the clearly dominant team here and - while I don't have data from before the update to prove it to you - the new gym system has made it worse for Instinct and Valor. Not only does Mystic hold about two thirds of all gyms in the city, most of the Mystic gyms are also fully occupied which creates additional pressure on those that are currently held by the other two teams. On average a Mystic gym has 5.4 defenders, Instinct and Valor gyms only 4.6 defenders.TeamGyms totalGyms %Def/GymDef totalDef %Mystic6464.0%5.3934567.4%Instinct1919.0%4.688917.4%Valor1717.0%4.597815.2%The gym distribution before the update was roughly 50% Mystic and 50% Valor/Instinct with a slight advantage for Instinct. Thanks for reading. via /r/TheSilphRoad http://ift.tt/2ueFdQQ
