"How a Kanto Switch Game can Implement More Fleshed Out Side Quests"
Warning: lots of text ahead. If the supposed Pokemon Lets Go rumors are true and they will be remakes of Pokemon Yellow, then this is what I would like to see:More in-depth side quests. Pokemon SuMo and USUM started to do this with jobs where you look for a certain pokemon for a client. Gamefreak could incorporate this into the switch games and even give side quests their own little story like in other rpg's.SuMoUSUM side quests only rewarded players with money, so the switch games can take it up a notch and have side quests reward unique items and even pokemon! Now what side quests would appear in a remake in Kanto? Well heres my idea: in the original Pokemon Yellow you are able to receive all three starters - all of which are just given to you.Bulbasaur is given to you from a girl in Cerulean City when your Pikachu has 'max happiness'. Charmander is given to you by a guy after plowing through nugget bridge. Lastly, Squirtle is given to you by officer Jenny in Vermillion city after beating Lt Surge.Getting these 3 starters in Yellow were completely optional - which gives Gamefreak the perfect opportunity to make them side quests in the switch games. However they shouldn't be handed to you so easily. The method of acquiring the starters mentioned above in the original Pokemon Yellow can be used in the switch games - but to spice things up they will only be the prerequisite to start the side quest to receive the starters. Here's what they could do:Bulbasaur - to activate the side quest you must have pikachu/eevee at max happiness. The girl is looking for a kind trainer to give bulbasaur to - and after seeing Pikachu/Eevee at max happiness she will take notice of you. However this is not enough - she will then test you. The test could be any number of things - fetch a certain item, battle someone etc. But here's something more related to the kindness theme in the side quest: She wants you to show her how your bond with your pokemon can have a positive influence on them - and you will be left with the ambiguous text, "defeat 20 pokemon using your bond." Now how do you do it? Well there will be another house nearby, and inside will be a person that gives you the tm for return. Teach Pikachu/Eevee the move return and defeat 20 pokemon using that move at max power (max happiness). After finishing that, she will then approve of you, however the bulbasaur has not. A battle against bulbasaur will then ensue, where you have the oppotunity to catch it.Charmander - the only way to get to the guy who gives you the side quest is to pass through nugget bridge. Therefore the prerequisite is that you must defeat all of the trainers in nugget bridge (which includes your rival who you encounter at the start of the bridge). To start the side quest, speak to the guy and he will battle you. He has four pokemon - an onix, a sandshrew, a goldeen and a charmander. Beat him, then he will say his charmander is so weak compared to his other pokemon, and he says he will abandon it. Here you will have the opportunity to tell him that charmander can come with you instead. The guy agrees, and you are given the charmander. Now you may think this side quest seems simple, but here's the juicy part. You will be given charmander, but its 'growth' is locked. It cannot gain exp. To unlock its full potential, you must complete the side quest. Talk to the guy again and he will make fun of charmander. He wants you to prove to him that charmander is not pathetic - so you will have to beat his team from before (minus the charmander) using only your new charmander alone. This could be a bit tricky since you're facing several pokemon with the type advantage, and charmander will not have metal claw. The player will have to be clever in beating this guy- one method is teaching it tm's. Its growth may be stopped but it can still learn tm's. Another is using healing items and battle items. After defeating him, the side quest will be complete and charmander can now level up.Squirtle - The prerequisite for this side quest is beating Lt Surge. Before meeting the prerequisite, Officer Jenny in Vermillion City will have a dialogue along the lines of "a gang of pokemon are committing several crimes around this area. I advise you to be careful on your journey" - foreshadowing the upcoming sidequest. After beating Lt. Surge, speak to her and she will respect your skill as a trainer, and ask you for your help. She wants you to help her take down a gang of squirtles terrorizing around vermillion and its surrounding routes. You will have to go all around these areas to find squirtles to battle and beat. Officer Jenny will stay in vermillion to protect the public - and she'll give you hints of the whereabouts of individual squirtles around different areas. There will be one squirtle in route 6 (north of vermillion), route 11 (east of vermillion) and route 2 (you have to go past digglett cave to get to the squirtle in this route). After beating all three squirtles, go back to Officer Jenny and you will find that she is being attacked by a gang of the same squirtles, this time with the boss present. A battle against them ensues. This could go one of two ways - the battle could be a horde battle like in gen 6, with you battling all 3 of the squirtles plus the higher level boss squirtle in the centre. The other way this battle could go is that it could be like a totem pokemon battle like in gen 7 - you're up against the boss squirtle who has a higher level than the other squirtles and will also have a powerup (in speed or special attack etc) - and it will summon its gang members one by one until it is beaten. After beating the boss squirtle, Officer Jenny will arrest the gang - and she will find that the boss squirtle has taken a liking to you, so she gives it to you. End of side quest. The Legendary Pokemon (birds and mewtwo) can also have side quests tied to them, instead of just standing around in uninhabited areas. If you continued to read all the way to this point, thank you. Writing this was fun. The beauty with side quests is that it adds a spice and to your journey, prolonging it. Going out of your way to finish side quests and receiving unique rewards will make the switch game feel more unique and different from the originals, rather than going through the same journey again in HD. via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/2ke8La5
