"Average Dust Cost to get High IV Pokemon via Trading"

#PokemonGO: tl;dr Get to best friendship level, trade high level pokemon, trade oftenA lot has been written about the IV-reroll during trading and that this aspect makes it useless for trainers who want to use trading for high IV / meta-relevant Pokemon. I did calculate a few numbers and actually disagree with this sentiment. Trade can be very powerful in adding to a good collection of high IV Pokemon or to get meta-relevant gym attackers. Niantic (rightly in my view) nerfed the silver platter trade - meaning 100% IV Pokemon shouldn't be traded at all. But a re-roll of IV offers opportunities when trading weather boosted high level Pokemon.Disclaimer: I assume the IV re-roll is an unbiased re-roll with a floor. I haven't seen any information to the contrary yet and it becomes less and less likely that Niantic did some clever hidden algorithm to take the pre-trade IV into account. I'm taking the floor values from /u/ig88b https://ift.tt/2tXdFO2 this out of the way - let us dive directly into the numbers. The first table looks into the average number of Pokemon you need to catch, trade or raid to get a Pokemon with a perfect IV or an IV above a certain treshold.Description100% IV98%+ IV96%+ IV93%+ IV91%+ IV15 AttackWild catch40961024.0409.6204.8117.016Floor 1/1/1 (good)3375843.8337.5168.896.415Floor 2/2/2 (great)2744686.0274.4137.278.414Floor 3/3/3 (ultra)2197549.3219.7109.962.813Weather boost1728432.0172.886.449.412Floor 5/5/5 (best)1331332.8133.166.638.011Egg/Raid21654.021.610.86.26A normal trade costs 100 dust. This allows us to calculate the average dust cost that we need to spend when trying to get a pokemon with an IV above a certain value. This data is displayed in table 2:DescriptionDust 100% IVDust 98%+ IVDust 96%+ IVDust 93%+ IVDust 91%+ IVDust 15 AttackFloor 1/1/1 (good)33750084375337501687596431500Floor 2/2/2 (great)27440068600274401372078401400Floor 3/3/3 (ultra)21970054925219701098562771300Floor 5/5/5 (best)1331003327513310665538031100I would like to put these values into context. It does cost (on average) 13310 dust at best friendship level to get a 96%+IV Pokemon. This is actually nearly 5% cheaper than powering up a Pokemon from level 34 to 35. 33275 dust for a 98%+ Pokemon is 17% less than the amount needed to power up from level 32 to 35 and 133100 is 3% less than powering up an egg/raid pokemon from level 20.I'm not saying it is practical to stop powering up a 96% IV level 34 pokemon, a 98% level 32 Pokemon or a 100% level 20 Pokemon and instead to trade (lots) of level 35 pokemon of the same kind to safe dust. But this example shows how valuable actually trading of high level Pokemon can be.The numbers get even better for 'inferior' 91%, 93% or 15 attack Pokemon.Weatherboost becomes now even more important as that is the only way to catch level 31-35 pokemon. Below is a quick table that lists the chance of getting a weatherboosted Pokemon above a given levelLevelChance351 in 3034+1 in 1533+1 in 1031+1 in 6But what about shiny/legendaries? The third table lists a multiplier for the dust cost involving legendary/shiny trades,FriendshipMultiplier normal tradeMultiplier Legendary/ShinyGood friend1200Great friend1160Ultra friend116Best friend18If you trade shiny Pokemon for good IV then you want to be at least an ultra friend with your trading partner. And you might trade legendaries rather for the candy as for the opportunity of a good IV.In summary - trade re-rolls can actually be great to boost your team of good Pokemon. Being best friend boosts your chances. Try to catch as many high level weather boosted Pokemon as you can. Then trade these in exchange for Pokemon of a similar level. There is an element of luck involved - so trade often and don't get frustrated if the first few trades don't yield what you want. The 100% IV trade will be rare - but there are many trades which are still very valuable. via /r/TheSilphRoad https://ift.tt/2lTodcR
