"Controversial, potentially unpopular opinion about Let's Go"
Ever since the recent Masuda comment, most core series fans have been voicing their opinion on the gameplay changes present in Let's Go, such as the removal of wild battles in favour of Safari Zone style encounters, gym requirements, and unnecessary simplification of the series's most iconic and beloved mechanics. However, I personally have a minor gripe with the game that I don't see many people mentioning, and was also wondering what others thought on the matter. The graphics just don't feel right. They don't look bad, they just look....off is what I'm saying. Look at it this way. Gen I had a lack of colour, chibi overworld sprites and inanimate battle sprites. Gen II added colour, which Gen III built upon. Gen IV mixed 3D models into the overworld in a near unnoticeable fashion for the most part. Gen V added fully animated battle sprites, and Gen VI was the first jump to 3D. Gen VI had models that fit the 'flow' of the series art style, it had the chibi overworld 'sprite' like proportions, and outlined models that gave that sprite like impression. The battle models themselves highly resembled Sugimori's art style and looked like the logical conclusion as to what direction they were aiming for stylistically from the start, and Gen VII only amplifies this by making Human characters fit the proportions in Sugimori's art style, furthur uniting the official art and game graphics. While it was impossible to get the 3DS models to be 100% accurate to the art style, it came as close as it could get, however, Let's Go's visual style feels more like the lineless mode on emulators, which quite a few people find jarring in emulated playthroughs, Let's Go, however, atleast has lighting that takes the linelessness into account. Let's Go's art style isn't necessarily bad, per say, but it just feels like it doesn't fit the progression of the series. What's a real shame is this hybridisation of the 3D models and Sugimori art style that we saw in Gen VI-VII that isn't present in Let's Go, yet Sugimori's art style for Let's Go itself is a hybridisation of his current and old art styles, taking the watercolour shading and more blocky, chibi proportions of his old style and combining it with his modern lineart and colouring style. This would have been the perfect opportunity to have this art style translate into the game, giving it a unique, yet fitting, look. What is your opinion on Let's Go's art style? via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/2JLpjRh
