"UPDATE: I was WRONG - Niantic did a great job at extending the Dortmund fun worldwide and I'm hopeful the same will go for Go Fest (and why FOMO can be detrimental to the game)"

#PokemonGO: Just a few days back, I posted [this complaint about Niantic giving players with higher income an advantage](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/8v2m9q/why\_does\_niantic\_create\_an\_unfair\_advantage\_to/ in reference to the Dortmund event.)Essentially, I was pretty darn bummed that attendees of these extremely prohibitive and restrictive events are essentially given free shinies and rares just for having the means to be able to travel long distances at will, putting active players who are restricted to their own communities an unfair advantage.I'd just like to eat my words here - Niantic did a really good job at making us locally-bound players feel like we were at the event with the high shiny rate of Roselia. What upset me was the assumption on my part that, worldwide, we would have a rate of 1/450 for shiny Roselia while travelers at Dortmund enjoy a much higher rate - but I was wrong. I don't know the exact numbers, but almost everyone in my Discord group got a shiny Roselia (most got two or more, some even over 10!). It really helped make us feel like we were part of the event.I'm not saying shinies should be easy to come by, but in cases like these when it's only a two-day event during a busy weekend and people who have work aren't able to participate as much, it's great to know that a lot of people can realistically get a shiny without killing themselves trying to cram gametime. If it's a weeklong event, I totally understand keeping the shiny rate the same as normal, but for short 2-day events like this, it is a great, positive thing for the community to be able to relax and just hunt instead of stressing over "will I or won't I".FOMO (fear of missing out) was one of the main driving forces of this game in 2017 and early 2018 but the community has slowly come to the realization that FOMO is not a game mechanic, and in the longterm, actually drives players away.I saw so many comments on Silph about folks who just were exhausted with the game and really demoralized over the assumed fact that only Dortmund attendees would be able to enjoy a reasonable shot at catching a brand new shiny (and plenty of comments from the detractors who say "hurrr you don't have to play") and that tune changed only a few hours into the Roselia spawns. Not every shiny release should be like this by any means - Adventure Week event was honestly my favorite event because while the shiny rate wasn't necessarily increased, between the spawns and research tie-ins, you had more chances to get a new shiny than, say, the Water Event (where shiny-possible spawns were diluted with junk).Anyways, just wanted to apologize for my previous post - Niantic did a great job. Though I myself personally only got one shiny Roselia among a lot of my friends who got 5-10+, the local community was so positive during the event and it was great to see.Sorry again about that previous post. via /r/TheSilphRoad https://ift.tt/2z4Fvgw
