"The "Specific" Defender Tier List [GamePress]"
#PokemonGO: Tier List ImageLink to Tier List PageGamePress hasn’t updated their gym defender tier list in 5 million years because, for the most part, having a defender tier list isn’t all that useful. For that reason, when the GP Gods asked the GP crew to make an updated list, we focused on making it more specific towards several defense strategies rather than ranking out the Pokemon’s general usefulness. As a result, there are 3 different tier lists for 3 different strategies: Pre-raid/immediate defense, general/2-6 hour defense, and 6+ hours defense. Given that Blissey, Snorlax, and Chansey are the greatest gym defenders, they stand above all 3 lists in the “Master Tier.”While this list/guide is more useful than the general one, it appears GP isn't ready to part with the old. The main thing to keep in mind between the two lists is the "old" one is a generalized ranking of all Pokemon's performance on defense where the "new" one is a specific ranking of all Pokemon's performance under certain strategies. Here’s a short breakdown of each of the new lists:Pre-Raid/ImmediateDefenders here ignore CP decay from timeLarge focus on throwing off Machamp, Dragon-types, and wasting timeIf you think Milotic’s type is too bland, that Gardevoir’s too fragile, or don’t like Dragonite’s weaknesses you have 8 other Pokemon to choose fromThe exalted Masters of Pokemon GO that make up Game Press only mostly agree on Tier 1, but they all agree that pre-raid defense almost entirely hinges on Blissey staying upGeneral/2-6 HoursFocus is on maintaining gym heightAs such, optimal CP ranges identified by u/eric654256 are focused on for defenseSlaking is Tier 1 because big CP = long time tallSlaking also isn’t half bad on defense (don’t @ me)If you suspect berries will happen before 4 hours or if your local gyms are attacked right away, direct your attention to the “Pre-Raid/Immediate” side of the list6+ HoursRemember this post from a year ago? Not much has changed.Goal is to maximize motivation over timeTier 1 is better than 1700-2200 CP BlisseyTier 2 roughly equal to 1700-2200 CP Blissey (at 1700-2200 CP)Tier 3 is better than Tier 2 at <1500 CPFor more details on each strat and the picks, check out the pageR.I. P. LaprasIn general, Lapras is a pretty good Pokemon for gym defense -that is until you realize it’s weak to Fighting and adds basically nothing to the gym aside from a resistance to Water and Ice. Steelix makes up for its Fighting weakness with versatile at-CP-range performance and resistances to Psychic, Dragon, and Electric. Slaking makes up for its Fighting weakness with its massive CP cap (gym height) and un-timely KOs with Play Rough. Lapras doesn’t make up for anything. Its time has come and gone.DragoniteSince this gets the most complaints whenever I suggest it, Dragonite is up on top, finger in the air, because it resists or is neutral to many key attacking types -most notably Fighting. Dragon-types are super effective to it, but Dragonite has lethality on them. For example, if your Ray gets Outrage locked then the defending Dragonite’s Outrage will likely KO. Dragonite is doubly weak to Ice, but Ice-types are horrible outside of the Dragonite matchup. While making Dragonite specific battle parties and switching around attackers isn’t a huge hassle for everyone, it is enough of a hassle for most people. To add to Dragonite’s prowess, its legacy move “Dragon Claw” is better than “Body Slam” as an attack on defense, given its damage per second per energy (not to be confused with DPSxDPE).Dragonite is everything Lapras isn’t. It has huge stats, hits hard, is immune to everything has many relevant resistances, bites what bites it back harder, and is the color orange.
