"Adventure Sync and IOS Health - digging deeper how steps are counted in PoGo"

#PokemonGO: There is a lot of excitement around adventure sync - but also questions - especially about missing data. I tried to keep track of my steps in Pokemon Go and did around 30 screen shots to keep track of my step progress. I then cross examined this data with the data from the Health app in IOS. You can get more detailed data if you go to the daily step count and go down to "Show all data' and look at the data for an individual day if you want to do this for your own phone. Here are my findings so far:PoGo adds the individual steps it finds in the Health to update the count it displays. If steps are not registered in Health (yet) then PoGo can't update - simple. So always check Health first.2) There is a delay in updating the data. The health app can be ahead of PoGo - but don't worry - eventually PoGo tends to catch up. During 2 1 hour walks it reliably updated at least every 10 minutes. It took longer during times when I was less active or opened PoGo after some down time.3) The update cycle in IOS Health if very irregular. I hadn't used the app in a long time (got a FitBit in February and stopped using it) and noticed that in the last weeks it sometimes only updated once in 4 days !! This will certainly screw up any adventure sync. It seems that opening the app multiple times now (to get the data and to check) has triggered a more constant update again. So check first if you miss a lot when it updated your step count the last time. It is possible that it was a few days ago.4) Not all data gets added. Any entry below 10 steps seems to be ignored. All 4 entries of 2-9 steps are missing. That isn't much of a loss - but worthwhile mentioning as numbers otherwise won't add up. These only make up 21 steps over 2 day lost - so only important for accurate book keeping.5) The smallest number that I can proof to have been added is 21 steps.5) It is possible to lose steps. 2nd November I lost 226 steps - all steps between 18:10 to 20:07. I don't know yet what has caused this 2 hours not to register in PoGo. But knowing that I can cross reference steps exactly should enable to find out what might have happened in this 2 hours that caused it.6) I use a FitBit and tried to add this data during a time where I didn't carry my phone. The Fitbit steps show up (as duplicates) in Health but no steps from the FitBit got transferred to PoGo.7) new info!! /u/SupperlessTinware asked me about the km logged. My likely failed assumption was that km logged is calculated using steps. I now did dig deeper and found equivalent raw data for distance at the same time points. I contemplate if I add them to the table (lots of work). But it explains why my run which I did afetr posting this got fully added to my egg distance. I did get 3 updates in health from my run. 13:28 - 1.3 km in 10 min, 13:38 1.7 km in 10 min, 13:48 0.4 km in 10 min. The first and last data point includes walking/preparing to run or resting after the run. The only data point where I actually ran calculates to a speed of 10.2 km/h which is below the speed limit. So while Fitbit clogged me at 10.59 km/h PoGo doesn't know I was above the speed limit at any time as the max speed PoGo sees is 10.2 km/h.I added the raw data in table form in case you want to convince yourself. I show the date, steps and count for Health. For easier cross reference I also calculated cumulative steps. For Pogo I show the date, time and cumulative steps. The steps since last update are calculated. Time is when I took screen shots. I did this regularly on the 2nd to ensure I didn't miss any updates and only occasional during Gengar Day.edit: Finally managed to get the table 'mostly' to display as intendededit 2: off for a run above 10.5 km/h to gather some more data. Will answer any questions once I'm back.edit 3: back from the run. Overestimated my fitness after a long break from running. According to FitBit using my phone as GPS I managed 3.19 km in 18 min 4 sec with an average speed of 10.59 km/h - just the smallest amount above the speed limit. It did register 100% of steps and 3.17 km. The latter is a mistery to me as 2750 steps would equate to a step lengths of 1.15 m. So maybe it is using the GPS data from the phone. IPhone might think I was just below the speed limit - depending when it started/ended my run.edit 4: added point 7 and started to add km data from healthedit 5: I now have started to look into the km tracking / egg hatching - expect more tomorrowDateStepsCumulativekm in HealthTimeSteps PoGoTotalComment02 Nov38380.0206:4702 Nov16540.0108:0202 Nov501040.0208:2202 Nov2153190.1408:3602 Nov503690.0308:4102 Nov494180.0308:5002 Nov734910.0409:1102 Nov1256160.0809:2902 Nov2778930.1710:1602 Nov21511080.1310:2702 Nov1311218.1 metre10:3902 Nov6611870.0410:4902 Nov52417110.3311:1802 Nov89326040.6111:2702 Nov94635500.6211:3802 Nov11:44355435544 steps extra (possibly day before and some not counted)02 Nov77443240.5411:4802 Nov112354470.8711:5902 Nov12:0277443281123 steps not yet updated 3 min after health update02 Nov12:091123545102 Nov80262490.5412:0902 Nov12:14802625302 Nov78970380.5912:1902 Nov12:25789704202 Nov111481520.8612:2902 Nov12:351114815602 Nov116593170.8612:3902 Nov12:461165932102 Nov1110104270.8212:4902 Nov12:5311101043102 Nov710111370.5112:5902 Nov13:3601043102 Nov13:45010431delayed update02 Nov724118610.513:4802 Nov13:5214341186502 Nov13:5301186502 Nov644125050.4413:5802 Nov14:036441250902 Nov1045135500.8114:0802 Nov14:1310451355402 Nov14:1301250902 Nov1102146520.8614:1802 Nov14:2411021465602 Nov995156470.7714:2802 Nov14:319951565102 Nov1010166570.7914:3802 Nov14:4110101666102 Nov14:4601666102 Nov359170160.2714:4802 Nov14:503591702002 Nov14:5101702002 Nov967179830.714:5802 Nov15:029671798702 Nov415183980.3115:0302 Nov9184076.3 metre15:14these 9 steps don't register02 Nov15:1701798702 Nov15:244151840202 Nov3184102 metre15:40these 3 steps don't register02 Nov44184540.0216:0502 Nov8184623.8 metre16:16these 8 steps don't register02 Nov106185680.0616:4502 Nov52186200.0316:4602 Nov879194990.617:0602 Nov234197330.1517:0802 Nov17:241501855244 + 106 steps02 Nov17:30119519717entries 16:45 to 17:30 add up to all steps02 Nov921206540.6917:3202 Nov65207190.0417:4102 Nov117208360.0817:5302 Nov78209140.0418:1002 Nov55209690.0318:59missing02 Nov136211050.0819:30missing02 Nov35211400.0220:07missing02 Nov20:35118120898226 steps missing - not accounted'02 Nov521216610.3320:4102 Nov85217460.0520:4202 Nov20:565212141902 Nov608223540.3921:0802 Nov27223810.0121:1203 Nov2223831.4 metre07:52these 2 steps don't register03 Nov08:387202213903 Nov44224270.0309:2103 Nov1076235030.8609:5903 Nov431239340.3110:1903 Nov510244440.3510:3003 Nov899253430.5910:4503 Nov473258160.310:5003 Nov10:59296025099all steps updated apart of 47303 Nov818266340.5211:0503 Nov424270580.2811:2603 Nov251273090.1711:3603 Nov590278990.411:4203 Nov420283190.2611:5303 Nov585289040.3812:0903 Nov353292570.2312:2503 Nov405296620.2712:3503 Nov969306310.6512:4503 Nov245308760.1412:5503 Nov980318560.6413:0503 Nov955328110.6613:1503 Nov965337760.6613:2503 Nov13:28746832567all steps apart of 965 delayed03 Nov156339320.1113:3103 Nov21339530.0117:0003 Nov17:1911213368803 Nov17:38213370921 steps delayed03 Nov48340010.0220:4203 Nov134341350.0821:1404 Nov873422210:2504 Nov10:3025833967up to date again via /r/TheSilphRoad https://ift.tt/2qubzDm
