I get they care about continuity but retcons are a thing. Besides, they've done them with things like new types.Umbreon, Espeon, Glaceon, and Leafeon still don't evolve by Dusk, Dawn, Ice, and Leaf Stones, respectively. I guess Sylveon would be by Shiny Stone? Because Dusk and Dawn Stones weren't a thing in Gen II, they couldn't make them evolve that way, and we can't possibly contradict that.
