"Can someone explain why my friends stoped opening or sending gifts?"

#PokemonGO: I got about 20 friends from Reddit and I opened gifts daily and sent them as often as possible. With 6 of them I’m now on the last gift before becoming best friends and they have stopped sending and opening gifts. None of them have sent or opened for almost 2 weeks. Why would they do this? I had another friend that did the exact same thing on the day we would have become best friends, this friend actually deleted me without opening the gift I sent.
