"Estimate of how many total Magikarps needed to achieve gold Fisherman medal"

#PokemonGO: I've been trying to catch as many Magikarps as I can during the water festival in the hopes of making headway on the Fisherman medal. While the gold medal requires catching 300 big Karp's, I wondered how many in total you actually need to catch to expect to get that many big ones.I've been playing semi-regularly since the game came out and am at 194 / 300 big Karp's out of 1265 caught i.e. 15.33%. At this rate I'd need to catch another 700 to get my gold medal (close to 2000 total).Is this similar to the kinds of total others have experienced?
