I really got the vibe that Leon was an old playable character if that makes sense. Like he was the hero in some previous Pokémon game that never came out. The way the region talks about how he is unbeatable and has never lost a battle sounds like how you’d describe a playable character in a Pokémon game. He does all the “hero”stuff that the playable character usually does and he even was about to catch eternus in stead of you. His complete obsession and adoration of his charizard could be a reference to how popular Charizard was and Is among real world Pokémon fans. Even his lack of directions and inability to find his away around the region could imply that he was a playable character. Whenever there’s an event happening in a Pokémon game and your character needs to go save the day, you can get there at your leisure and do whatever you want until you get to an area where story becomes important. His ability to always be lost could signify a canon way of describing the playable characters lack of rush in world ending events. Even if he isn’t meant to actually be an unplayable playable character, I feel like there are far too many similarities for him not to at least symbolize a Pokémon hero who’s already finished his journey. We’ve been unbeatable champions, we’ve captured legendaries and saved the region and we’ve all felt that wonder and awe at how strong our first Pokémon was.
