"Help, can't complete step 3, Looming in the Shadows"

#PokemonGO: Hello all,My son is unable to complete step three of Looming in the Shadows. His account is through Pokemon Trainer Club and cannot access the friends list due to being under 13 years old. One if the tasks is to battle against another Trainer three times. Since he's got no friend list, this task is impossible. Normally these are auto completed for him, but not this time.
