"Did casual / bad PVP players just stop playing all together?"

#PokemonGO: I've noticed that my GBL great league matches to be uniformly much tougher while I'm stuck at 1800 when I was at 2400 around the same point last season. Everyone is using a stacked team when last season it was quick 5/5 sets. So basically, with a much more competitive pool of players, it will be even more impossible to reach 3000 this season and get the pose. Should most of us just stop playing GBL? What's the point if there literally are no distinctions between rank 8 and 9 vs 7?
