"Hop's first battle is a great way to design a tutorial battle"
Hello there! I know the opinions of sword and shield arent the best but i just want to give it a little complement in game design compared to the rest of the franchise (routes fall under level design I'm not talking about that)To put it simply, they dont give you an elemental move at level 5 and you have to level up to get one. This is already an improvement over gen 6 and 7's first rival battle but what makes it even better is that Hop has multiple pokemon. This means the game shows a new player that making a pokemon faint you level up and that levelling up can make your pokemon learn new moves. The game explains by showing you and not by shoving text down your throat. Returning players dont eve know they are in a tutorial, the way it is set up makes it feel like a normal battle against an npc.Another good thing about the battle is the place in the story. What i mean is losing actually has a small impact on dialog in the second battle, what i mean is Hop changes what he says depending on if you win or lose. every other pokemon game just has one line change and nothing really happens but the extra development for Hop makes the first hour feel much better in terms of player interactions, it's small but they will likely improve this with each game. via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/3sy9Qvu
