"Potential "Canon" team for Gold/Ethan"
In much the same way we know Red and Blue's teams based on GSC/HGSS, I thought about making a "canon" team for Gold/Ethan as well. There are several Pokemon who would fit being on Gold/Ethan's team. Here's my list:1.Cyndaquil/Quilava/TyphlosionThis one is pretty straightforward. This line fits Ethan's looks very well. Also, Totodile/Croconaw/Feraligatr fits your rival Silver perfectly. An artwork (not sure if it's official): https://ift.tt/3pKjusE anime counterpart of Gold/Ethan, Jimmy, started out with a Cyndaquil. Lyra fits Chikorita/Bayleef/Meganium very well.2.Togepi/Togetic/TogekissThis one is certainly on Ethan's team. You are obliged to take the Egg from Elm's assistant, and its final evolution is very strong. If the games had been remade again (most likely won't happen), the line would've been Fairy-type (and Flying) instead of Normal. That would be a very good help against Claire and Lance.3.Scyther/ScizorThis one might be a surprise to many. There are three good reasons I could find to include it; Firstly, the Bug-Catching Contest is a unique feature in these games, and if Ethan passes here on the correct day, it's almost certain he would compete here; and Scyther gives a very good chance of winning the contest. Secondly, Scizor is a Steel type, which was one of the new types introduced in Gen II, so that's another reason I included it. Thirdly, there is official artwork of Gold/Ethan in the Ruins of Alph with a Scizor. Link here: https://ift.tt/352f08S you'll see, there are four kinds of Pokemon here; Unown, Smeargle, Natu and Scizor. All of those are native to Ruins of Alph...EXCEPT Scizor.4.Eevee/UmbreonIt is optional to visit Bill to get the Eevee, but given the new Eeveelutions, I think Gold/Ethan would include it in his team. You could go with either Espeon or Umbreon here, but there are two reasons I chose Umbreon; In G/S/C, Red has an Espeon on his team, so Umbreon would be the 'opposite' to that. Also, Ethan's cap design strongly resembles Umbreon's pattern (black and yellow), so they are a good fit. Lastly, Umbreon's typing, Dark, is also a new type in Gen II, so I would include it in Gold/Ethan's team (so both a Steel-type and a Dark-type is included)5.SudowoodoThis one is a given. You are bound to encounter it as there's no way around it. You only have one chance to catch it, so Gold/Ethan would never miss this opportunity to register it in the Pokedex.6.Shiny GyaradosAlso a given. You need to battle it in order to progress in the story. And shininess was first introduced in Gen II, so Gold/Ethan would definitely use it, similar to having a Steel-type and Dark-type.Of course, there are other contenders that you could include. One is Dratini/Dragonair/Dragonite in Crystal/HGSS. However, it being a pseudo-legendary, and also because you would have THREE Flying-types with Togetic/Togekiss and Gyarados (both are 'forced'), I decided not to include it. Another is Tyrogue/Hitmontop. However, it is a long detour to find the Karate King, so I don't think Ethan would use it. If he did, though, he would evolve it into a Hitmontop, as that is a new Pokemon in Gen II. Another contender is Shuckle. A paranoid guy gives it to you because he's afraid of losing it after Silver steals his Sneasel. He technically only lets you borrow it for protection, but he'll let you keep it if its happiness is very high. So it definitely could make sense to have it on your team, as it is also a "gift".Another mention is Kenya the Spearow. However, as it is intended to be delivered with a mail from a guard guy to another man, it's not really your Pokemon, so I personally don't think it deserves a place on the team. Then there's also Suicune, which is, in my opinion, the central legendary of Johto (even more so than Ho-Oh and Lugia). You could have it on your team instead of Shiny Gyarados in Crystal. In HG/SS, you could use Shiny Gyarados for your Johto trip, and then switch to Suicune if you wanted when you find it in Kanto.Another possible contender is Ampharos. Red's ace is Pikachu, and Ampharos is a very recognizable Electric-type from Johto that could be a "counterpart" to Pikachu (and many like to use Ampharos on their team). via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/35521mR
