"What is the Point of a “Faithful” Remake? (Brilliant Diamond Shining Pearl Discussion)"

To be clear upfront this is not a hate/venting/bad-faith thread, I am genuinely asking! For context, I am a massive Sinnoh fan, it’s my favorite and most nostalgic region and I was very, very excited for the remakes. Unfortunately, the announcement of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl left me disappointed. Not necessarily because of the art style – I’m kind of 50/50 split on that (I think the world looks just as beautiful as the original game but don’t like the chibi character models) – but I realize that’s subjective anyway and not really the point. What actually disappointed me was the emphasis on doing a 1:1 ‘faithful’ remake of the world in the same top-down style. Now I’ve seen a lot of Sinnoh fans very happy and grateful that they’re taking that approach. I’m super happy for you guys (genuinely not salty, I got Legends: Arceus to be hyped about!) but this question is mostly for that crowd. Personally, when I was imagining a remake I was thinking about how Sinnoh would be reinterpreted in a more modern style, like ORAS. Seeing the remakes look exactly the same but 3D now, it made me wonder what the point is? Why wouldn’t I just play my copy of Platinum, since I think that game still looks amazing and BDSP is sticking so close to it? If the point was just to get Sinnoh on the Switch, how is this preferable to a straight port?I get that this is technically a remake since it was rebuilt in a new engine, but it seems like it’s closer to a remaster in spirit. Which seems like a missed opportunity to me, because I thought remakes were supposed to be about doing something fresh with an old game. Why pay to have almost the exact same experience again? It’s just left me wondering what’s the point of these games existing, and I’d be interested to hear the thoughts of people who are hyped for them.Tl;dr: People excited for BDSP, what's the point of a remake if it delivers the exact same experience as the original, which is still a solid product and a lot of fun on its own? via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/3b24emm
