"To the people who love PLA's battle system, is there something I'm not getting?"


To preface, I bought this game at launch and like many others, I love the catching mechanics. I love the exploration and the immersive feeling of working on your pokedex. PLA got that down and it did it very well. I am a fan of battling in Pokemon though. Very much so. To me, Pokemon is all about that feeling of having a good challenging battle and coming up with great strategies to overcome your opponent, self imposed challenge runs to make the fights more exciting, etc.After a few playthroughs now, I just cannot enjoy the battling in this game. I've seen people rave and rave how fast it is now and how much smoother battling is. But to me, that just doesn't make an engaging system. The styles seem like a good idea on paper, but in the end it really just seems to favor speed over all other stats, which puts defensively bulky Pokemon at a huge disadvantage if you want to have one on your team. Pokemon who are lower level than you can smoke you at any time, taking up a chunk of health regardless of those defenses. It turns all major fights into a big game of rocket tag basically. Unless you intentionally pick something that isn't super effective or what's gonna do a ton of damage, all fights basically boil down to just selecting a strong move and trading KOs back and forth until someone dies first. The lack of abilities and other features in other games remove the strategy aspect even further IMO and really dumbs down the combat to a really basic form that just isn't satisfying to play. Because of how battles seem to go for me 99% of the time, a lot of moves just seem useless like setup moves (Calm Mind, etc.) and other moves. It seems like unless you're doing damage you might as well be throwing the fight. By the time you've set up you've lost most of your HP or all of it because your opponent switched styles and got to attack like 2 or sometimes 3 times in a row.There's an endgame fight that people seem to absolutely LOVE that I cannot stand because you have to fight a ton of pokemon in a row with no chances to heal and under this battle system it's just almost impossible to pull off without cheese strategies. I love challenge in games, but this particular fight is so unpleasant to play for me under this game's battle system for the reasons listed above. And it's a shame because thematically and story wise, I adore the fight. The gameplay is dreadful though for me.I'm genuinely open to suggestions if there is something in this battle system I am not seeing or getting because I truly want to love this game as much as the rest of the Pokemon fanbase seems to. And I do overall like it for the catching but the battling is so unpleasant for me it really takes away from the experience.Is there something I'm not getting? I hope this doesn't come off as just me complaining about the game. I do want to love it. If there's something people can suggest I am seriously all ears. via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/VBTP9or
