"X/Y: What just happened to my game?"

So I was playing Y casually. As someone who's been playing pokemon since Gen 4, I'm pretty used to a lot of stuff and can go through the game casually, not 100% paying attention. I went fishing on Route 16 and found a Basculin. A threw out my lvl 35 Hippowdon, who was about the same level, but his EVs have already been maxed out. I wasn't fully paying attention when something strange happened.Hippowdon began taking damage from its own sandstorm. At first I thought I was seeing things but on the second turn it gave me the message "Hippowdon is buffeted by the sandstorm". What?!?The Basculin hit me with Aqua Tail and what should have been super effective instead played the resistant sound effect and said "its not very effective".I should disclaimer a couple things:>No, I have never used a cheating device on my 3DS or Pokemon Y>This wasn't one of those trainer inverse battles, it was a wild encounter>The only explanation I can think is maybe it had Mold Breaker but that only affects abilities, right? Not typing.You might think that maybe I'm trolling, but I swear I am just so confused.
