"Pointless Theory: Originally, Umbreon and Espeon were probably going to be in a trio with Leafeon, who would have evolved in the daytime."

A little known fact is that in Gen II, moonlight and morning sun were part of a trio with synthesis, and each had its effect doubled during a certain time of day: moonlight at night, morning sun in the morning, and synthesis during the day. Morning sun was Espeon's signature move while Moonlight was learnable by Umbreon and a few others. As we saw in the leaked Spaceworld demo, Leafeon (or at least a grass-type eeveelution) was originally designed for gen II.This leads to the fairly obvious conclusion that originally, each of the three moves was associated with a different one of the Eevees, and that Leafeon probably evolved with high happiness in the middle of the day at some point during development (in the demo they all evolve with stones still). At some point they removed Leafeon (maybe because day/night/morning is much less intuitive than day/night) but left in its old signature move. via /r/pokemon https://ift.tt/2Lrt04b
