Seems to only show the 3 footprints and the Pokemon are at the actual stop.There's a seperate "nearby" and "sightings" section for pokemon.You can highlight one Pokemon at a time in the nearby section and the footprint indicator stays above the pokestop.If you click a Pokemon in the sightings section, a popup message appears saying "Find these Pokemon in the wild"The Pokemon are actually at the poke stop they corrispond to. So just walk to the stop to find the pokemon.If you select a pokestop but don't catch the pokemon in time a notification will appear saying something like 'The pokemon has fled from this location!'
