"Research - Pokemon "Jumping" causes ball to project higher"

#PokemonGO: This is something that I think we have all just assumed as fact but as far as I know, no real research has been done on it so I decided to test this out.Anecdotally, I had noticed that most of the time when a Pokemon jumped, it caused me to throw the ball over them. It was hard to say whether this was just me trying to compensate for the jump or whether the game actually 'forced' the ball above the Pokemon.Pretty simple setup. I attempted 204 throws while blindfolded while my friend watched the result. The logic being that I could not be unconsciously influenced to throw the ball a little higher when the Pokemon jumped, as I could not see it. My friend would record whether I threw during a jump, and whether the ball went over the Pokemon or not. I knew which Pokemon it was prior to throwing in order to have a somewhat reasonable estimate as to the distance, but before throwing I always covered my eyes.Results204 throws total168 Non-jumping throws155 Hit Pokemon or below/miss to the side9 over the PokemonResult = 7.74% of throws over the Pokemon when it is NOT jumping36 Jumping Throws19 Hit Pokemon or below/miss to the side17 over the PokemonResult = 47.22% of throws over the Pokemon when it IS jumpingConclusion: The app actually forces the ball over the Pokemon when the monster jumps. It is not some unconscious attempt to throw it higher as it is in the air, but rather a game mechanic.IMO this is a bit sketchy on Niantic's part given the scarcity of balls and the obnoxious price of balls in the shop, but I suppose they need some way to get a steady stream of money.tl;dr - The app forces you to overthrow when a Pokemon jumps.EDIT - Whoa, lots of attention, cool.To clarify a couple things: I forgot to mention that we did not record throws where the pokemon 'bashed' the ball away. They really weren't relevant.Second, I do wish the sample size could have been a bit higher, but considering all the misses and the balls I lost while the pokemon were 'bashing', I spent about ~340 balls on this experiment. I'm semi-rural and can't really continue doing that so hopefully this is conclusive enough :)Third, one last conclusion left in the comments (/u/SirLoin027), this mechanic can actually help you catch far away mons (Rapidash, Dragonite, etc.) if you time your throws just as they jump.Fourth, and I can't believe I have to explain this one, the 'scarcity of balls' comment I made is in reference to us rural and semi-rural players. If you live anywhere with a decent amount of pokestops, then I would refrain from commenting on that statement. via /r/TheSilphRoad http://ift.tt/2eKq4eF
