"The Tyranitar Hype Train-RIP to the big 5."

#PokemonGO: Tyranitar has always been one of my favorites. Not because of his appearance, typing, or combat viability, but because since I was a kid, he always seemed to be "the rarest" pokemon in my eyes. I didn't even know he existed in Gen 2 until Fire Red/Leaf Green. With his base stats placing him at 3653 max CP (higher than our gym lord Dragonite), we already know he's going to have an impact on the gym meta, but I'm here to delineate just how huge his impact is going to be.Offensive TyranitarOn offense, Tyranitar is going to be a direct counter to most top gym defenders, namely Dragonite, Snorlax, Lapras, Slowbro, and Exeggutor. With his dark/rock typing he will resist the majority of their best defensive sets AND most likely hit them back STAB and Super Effectively.Dragonite-Dragonite already fears Lapras, but now faces double the trouble with Tyranitar in play. All defensive sets not carrying Steel Wing may be hit with a super effective STAB Rock Attack.Lapras-Commonly seen as a pokemon who has no true counter. Tyranitar is going to swag on it, taking neutral hits from all of it's attacks and then potentially hitting it back with a STAB super effective rock attack, ruining it's day. So far ground typing and poor stats are holding all other rock types from this feat.Snorlax-Also seen as a pokemon with no true counter. Tyranitar's Dark typing will allow him to resist both Lick and Zen Headbutt, while his Rock typing will take care of any normal blows. This leaves an attacking Tyranitar only vulnerable to Earthquake sets, which, all things considered, aren't going to be much for him to worry about.Exeggutor and Slowbro- While these two pokemon dominate gym defense with their Psychic focused sets, Tyranitar will be able to shrug them off with his Dark typing and potentially hit back with a STAB super effective dark hit. While their alternate typed charge moves could give TTar some trouble, they will never be the same all around good gym defense picks they used to be.So who stands up to Tyranitar on gym defense? Of all pokemon, Poliwrath will be doing it best. Poli's fighting typing will allow him to resist any STAB attack TTar can dish out while giving Tyranitar the worst day imaginable with Bubble. That said, with all the new Pokemon with higher CP ranges than Poliwrath in gen 2, he may not be able to stick on gyms long enough to ward off the terror that is Tyranitar, making his contribution near moot.Defensive TyranitarWhile TTar's rock typing is going to leave him vulnerable to the meta-game defining Vaporeon, Tyranitar is going to shine against the top 4 attackers for the same reasons he'll shine against the top gym defenders. Lapras, Dragonite, Snorlax, and Exeggutor cannot safely go against this beast. While he will be no concern for Vaporeon, everyone else is going to sweat.Looking towards the futureWe all know that the legendaries are going to also affect the meta in a huge way (if they ever release), but does Tyranitar flinch before them? I think not.Mewtwo- One of the only two pokemon to have a higher CP max than Tyranitar is not only weak to TTars Dark typing, but this same Dark Typing resists all of Mewtwo's attacks, rendering him feeble.Ho-oh- The second pokemon with a higher CP max than TTar, also can't land a solid hit on Tyranitar's Rock typing. This same Rock typing also hits for double against our great fire/flying bird.Lugia/Mew/Celebi/Articuno/Zapdos/Moltres- All fall victim to the same faults as the two legendaries above them. Flying, Psychic, Ice, and Fire will give them nothing but trouble against Tyranitar. The Dogs-Of the 3 legendary dogs, only Suicune may be effective against the tyrant. Entei being felled by it's fire typing. Raikou only being a neutral threat.Potential MovesetsThe ideal: Bite/Rock Throw + Stone Edge/Rock Slide/Dark PulseWhat I'm emotionally prepared for: Bite/Rock Throw + Stone Edge/Earthquake/Hyper BeamWhat I'd uninstall if happens: Mud Slap/Shot ANYTHINGClosingAs you can tell, out of any Pokemon that is to be released in gen 2, none are going to have quite the impact that Tyranitar will have. While he won't do much to work against the Vaporeon side of the meta, he will absolutely crush every God Tier pokemon we know and any legendary we may know for time to come.Aside from Tyranitar, I'm also excited to see where Kingdra and Porygon2 wind up in the meta. At the end of the day, that will be decided by their movesets. Fingers crossed for Bubble Kingdra.Good night Snorlax and Lapras. Your time as kings is over. via /r/TheSilphRoad http://ift.tt/2fudXno
