"Fail. Prestiging a gym you're already in, with the mindset of joining."

#PokemonGO: Prestiging a gym so friendlys can join is great and all, but I just prestiged a gym from 42K to 50K thinking I would join. I thought someone had sniped it and was really pissed. I then saw that the empty spot was still there. Has anyone else done this? Unless you remember that you're already inside of the gym, or you check to see if you're in it, there's no simple way of knowing you've already joined them gym.
