"Gen 1: The Town Map, and why the rival from RBGY was a bigger troll than he is in the remakes"
So with the recent bank update, I've finally gotten around to picking up Yellow on the 3DS VC. The nostalgia trip has been incredible, and despite the outdated graphics, the unpolished mechanics, and the comparative lack of quality of life features, it really does hold up.But I also noticed something that I didn't a couple of decades ago. I'm probably far from the first one to notice this, but the rival in the Gen 1 games, aka BLUE aka GREEN aka GARY aka BUTTSEX, is even more of a troll than I remembered, and certainly a bigger troll than he was in FireRed/LeafGreen.And it all has to do with the Town Map.So right after you are given the Pokedex and assigned with catching them all, your rival loudly announces that he will get a town map from his sister, and that he will tell her not to give you one. Naturally, your first instinct is to go over to his place and talk to his sister, whereupon she kindly gives you a town map of your very own. Take that, DUMBASS! You showed him, right?WRONG!The town map is completely useless. Without taking external resources (like the Internet) or past experience into account, the game is pretty linear and the game world is quite small. All you need to really navigate the game is the ability to just talk to NPCs and read road signs. And best of all, the Pokedex has a freaking map function. Sure, it doesn't tell you the name of every location, but all you have to do is explore the damn world, and bam, you have everything you need to make your own map.Of course, when you play the game for the first time, you don't know all of that. All you think is, "Hey, free item! Screw you, ASSFART!" But then you go through the game. And at some point, you run low on bag space. You look through your bag and see the town map, and you may think, "I never use this. Let's get rid of it." But you can't. You go to the PC and try to toss it, but the game will not let you. Without glitches or editing the save, you are stuck with the Town Map. Forever. With only 20 bag slots and 50 PC item slots, your rival has forever screwed you out of an item slot with this useless cursed map.Even if you catch up to your rival, even if you beat him in every encounter, even if you become the league champion and prove once and for all that you are the very best, nothing you do will change the fact that he managed to trick you out of an inventory slot. He has crippled you ever so slightly, and the worst part is that he got you to do it yourself.POOHEAD, you magnificent bastard. via /r/pokemon http://ift.tt/2kbWRz6
