"Why you shouldn’t hype yourself and others on the possibility of Pokémon Switch at E3 (X-posted from r/nintendo)"

It’s the perfect storm for a hype letdown of historic proportionsYou know how hype letdown happens. “Possible” becomes “probable” becomes “a credible source of leaks tweeted…” becomes “Pokémon Switch hype for tomorrow guys!!!” becomes “WTF NINTENDO WHERE’S POKÉMON!?”But it’s got the potential to be worse this time, because a main series Pokémon game for the Switch is:- something a lot of people want for themselves- something a lot of people want for NintendoA new mainline Pokémon for the Switch is basically an instant win condition. And for fans invested in the success of the Switch, the thought of Pokémon making the jump is even more appealing. That means people want it even more, which makes people tend to lend greater credence to rumours and “leaks” from the usual suspects. People are already placing too much stock in the Pokémon Stars rumour. People were already hoping for Pokémon in the Switch presentation, only a couple of months after Sun and Moon released. It’s a recipe for disaster. It’s not actually that likely to happen so soon, if at allMasuda has said in this interview (links to a translation of a Spanish interview; the original interview is linked there) that they’d prefer to take a wait-and-see approach with the console. I wish they wouldn’t, really I do, I wish they’d be the ones blazing the trail. But that’s what he says is gonna happen, and I see no reason to doubt him, and especially no reason to put more credence than not in the notion that he’s lying. And of course, Sun and Moon are still pretty young on the market. Give it a while. Also, Pokémon traditionally targets a holiday release – would they be willing to compete with Mario this year?Okay, a silver liningAt the very least, the probability of a main series Pokémon game making it to the Switch is higher than it’s ever been for a home console. Pokémon’s developers have always maintained – sometimes to the point of being a bit stubborn – that the main series needs to be portable and benefit from socialising.Well, the Switch has that. In fact, the Switch is built around that, and it’s selling itself on that. If ever there was an opportune time for Pokémon to move to a console, that time is now. Also, Pokémon doesn’t have that long of a development cycle. This may not necessarily hold true if they want to go all out with the newfound power of the Switch, but I almost hope they don’t go too bombastic. Because the shorter the time between them deciding that the Switch is worth developing for, and them announcing the game, the better.Bottom line: keep cool, don’t base your attitude toward the Switch on mere hopes and dreams, and don’t listen to rumour-dealers and “leakers”. It’ll happen if and when it happens. via /r/pokemon http://ift.tt/2iTBMIC
