"Three of the best Japanese fan theories"

Ithoughtofpostingthisin/r/pokemonconspiracies,butthisseemstobeabetterplacetopostinbecausetheyarequiteconvincingIMO. I am sure most of you have already heard of Green/Blue’s dead Raticate theory (not a fan theory anymore because it was confirmed in 2014**) and Cubone/Kangaskhan theory. Recently I came across several other fan theories on Japanese websites. Some of them are rubbish in my opinion (e.g.Tangelaisactuallyagirlwhogotcaughtbywaterweedsanddrowned,amissioninvolvingTeamRocketusingtoxicgasinUndergroundPathwascutaftertheTokyosubwaysarinattacksothePathisdeserted…etc) , but some are quite convincing. Here I am compiling three of the best theories I found. The first two theories are also quite popular in the Western world, but the English explanations are not very good, so I feel that I should translate the Japanese counterparts for you guys. **If you don’t already know, it was confirmed in this official pic:Why did Green come to the Pokémon Tower? He came here to visit the Pokémon he cherished very much. Although Team Rocket and Mr. Fuji were arguing upstairs, he was so sentimental at that point, he didn’t hear anything.  1. Gengar is a Clefable possessed by Haunter Western version of this theory: “Gengar is Clefable’s shadow”, which IMO is not very accurate because it doesn’t explain the weight. Look at the weight and height of Haunter, Gengar and Clefable:WeightHeightHaunter0.1 kg1.6 mGengar40.5 kg1.5 mClefairy40.0 kg1.3 m How does Gengar, a Ghost-type Pokemon, go from 0.1kg to 40.5kg (a 405-time difference) and still keep its height? The only possible way is to possess something else. In this case, a Clefable. Other aspects are what you already know. They look similar. Clefable live in quiet, remote mountains. Gengar also like to attack people who get lost in mountains.  2. Caterpie was meant to evolve into Venomoth, and Venonat was meant to evolve into Butterfree Yet another popular theory, which is refuted by some people with this pic, but Venomoth is actually (or originally) not a moth. Venomoth’s Japanese name is モルフォン/Morphon. Morpho is a kind of butterfly. Unlike their caterpillar counterparts, Morpho adults are poisonous, due to toxins they sequestered from plants on which they ate as caterpillars. Another evidence is the weight of the four Pokemon.Metapod: 9.9 kgButterfree: 32.0 kgVenonat: 30.0 kgVenomoth: 12.5 kgHow does a 32kg butterfly emerge from a 9.9kg pupae? And why is Venomoth less than half of Venonat's weight? If you swap Butterfree and Venomoth their weight make much more sense.Metapod: 9.9 kgVenomoth: 12.5 kgVenonat: 30.0 kgButterfree: 32.0 kg Finally, since Gen 3, both Caterpie and Venomoth have Shield Dust as their ability while both Venonat and Butterfree have Compound Eyes in common. It has to be intentional on the part of Game Freak. The most convincing explanation is that during development, the team realised that the Bug/Poison typing of Caterpie’s final form Venomoth (Morphon) would overlap its parallel Pokemon, Beedrill. As a solution, they swapped Venomoth and Butterfree, and made Butterfree the final form of Caterpie instead, but they forgot to swap the weight of the two Pokemon.  3. The Regi series is a tribute to WW2 hibakusha This is the most interesting (or controversial) theory I found. As far as I know this theory is not well known in the Western world, but quite popular in Japan. 1. Real world locations of the RegisAs you know Hoenn is a 90-degree-rotated Kyushu. If we convert where the Regis are found to real world locations, they would be found in Miyazaki, Nagasaki and Ooita Prefectures, where WW2 aerial and atomic bombings occurred. What about Regigigas? In the real world, Regigigas is found in Wakkanai-Shi in Hokkaido. More specifically, Cape Souya. The World Peace Bell, Navy War Memorial and Monument of Peace are located here.Coincidence? I think not. 2. Strange inscriptions/directions in the Chamber and cavesSome inscriptions/directions in the Sealed Chamber and Regi caves are quite strange if you think about it. わたしたちわ このあなで くらし せいかつしそして いきてきた (In this cave we have lived AND SURVIVED.)The English localisation “In this cave we have lived” is certainly not wrong because the meaning of “いきてきた” depends on context, but I think it can be interpreted as “lived on” or “survived” here. It sounds like something almost killed those who lived in the cave. Or maybe not if you are a sceptic. (In front of a wall) “Use Dig here”“First comes Wailord. Last comes Relicanth.”(After examining the wall again, the ground will shake violently and all three seals will be broken.)Why Dig? And why specifically Wailord and Relicanth? "Stop and wait. Wait for time to pass twice."I have only played RBY, GSC, RSE and their respective remakes so correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I know, this is the only instance in the series in which you are required to wait without doing anything. "With new time, hope and love, aim to the sky in the middle."“New time, hope and love” and “aim to the sky”? The wording sounds strange doesn’t it? Why not just ask the player to use fly in the middle? Everything makes sense if you think in this way.Dig = digging an air-raid shelter. Wailord = Fat Man and Relicanth = an aerial bomb or Little Boy. Violent earthquake = explosion(s). People who stayed in the shelter survived. Two minutes without doing anything = moment of silence for the hibakusha.“With new time, hope and love, aim to the sky” can be interpreted differently by everyone. I personally think this is a message from the hibakusha to the next generation. 3. Footprints and Cries of the three RegisFirst, look at the footprints of the three Regis.RegirockRegiceRegisteelNow listen carefully to the cries of the Regis:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NhtIUWYdv34The most popular explanation is that they represent, respectively, (arming of) the atomic bomb, dropping the bomb, and the sound/flash of explosion. 4. MovesetThey are the only Pokemon who learn Explosion (known as だいばくはつ Giant Explosion in Japanese) at Lv 1. This is also the only move they learn until reaching Lv 9.This means you can use Heart Scale to make them relearn, or more accurately “recall” (Move Reminder is known as 技思い出し Move Recall/Recollect in Japanese) Explosion. A reference to an explosion in the past, perhaps?Starting from Gen 4 the Regis learn Hyper Beam (known as はかいこうせん Destruction Beam in Japanese) at Lv 89, possibly referring to 9th of August when Fat Man was dropped on Nagasaki. 5. Other argumentsThese are claims I consider as weak arguments, but nonetheless I’m leaving them here.Braille is a reference to disabled peopleThey are all weak to fighting-type (which represents war). They all look like disfigured hibakusha I should also mention that in a Japanese Pokemon theory discussion thread, a person claimed he/she asked Game Freak if the Regis are related to war. Game Freak replied “Well noticed” (“よくわかりましたね”). However, this person did not provide any evidence to his claim. This is the longest post I typed on Reddit haha.
