"What was the "theme" of Alola?"

There's a common idea that's been floating around for several years which posits that every region in Pokemon's main series games has an overarching theme. These themes affect everything from the plot to the characters, the Pokémon, the locations, and even the name of a region. So far the themes look something like this:Kanto - engineering and geneticsJohto - culture and traditionHoenn - (balance of) natureSinnoh - religion/mythologyUnova - oppositesKalos - beauty (this one was actually confirmed by Junichi Masuda)I'll go more in-depth on these at the end of the post My question is: what do you think was the theme of Alola? Kanto: engineering and geneticsThe main legendary, Mewtwo, was created through genetic engineering. Eevee is able to evolve into multiple forms because of its unstable DNA. Voltorb is the result of a failed pokeball experiment. Porygon is a virtual reality Pokemon. Mew has the DNA of every Pokemon. Ditto can rearrange its genetic structure to temporarily become any Pokemon. Generation I introduced the most fossil Pokemon of any generation, which are obtained with the DNA of ancient Pokemon found in fossils. The PC system was invented by a Kanto computer engineer, Bill, who at one point accidentally turned himself into a Pokemon. Kanto has the HQ of Silph Co., whose scientists engineered the best pokeball in the game: the Master Ball.Johto: culture and traditionThis was the first region where the legendary Pokemon were part of the cultural tapestry of a region. Their story is passed down in legends in Ecruteak City. The Kimono girls keep ancient tradition alive in both battle and dance. The buildings in Ecruteak and Violet have more traditional architecture, with the Bell Tower, Burned Tower, and Sprout Tower standing out as cultural landmarks. Even Celebi gets its own dedicated shrine in Ilex Forest. Kurt upholds a more traditional form of Pokemon manufacture, and the town where he lives maintains old stories about Slowpoke. Cianwood City's pharmacy represents over "500 years of tradition", and sailors in the town repeat tales about Lugia. The Dragon's Den in Blackthorn City was built by a clan of masters who have lived in the city for generations. Gym leaders Pryce and Chuck both maintain daily traditions of meditating under waterfalls.Hoenn: (balance of) natureIn the Hoenn games, the player has the responsibility of stopping Team Magma/Team Aqua, whose plans with Groudon/Kyogre would upset the balance of nature. The people of Hoenn live in harmony with nature: the inhabitants of Fortree City make their homes atop tall trees, while Pacifidlog town floats on top of a Corsola colony. Players, too, can make their homes among nature using Secret Power, to form a shelter out of trees, caves, or bushes. Hoenn's Pokemon represent an important interconnectedness: The regis, the Latis, Illumise/Volbeat, Zangoose/Seviper, and the version mascots themselves interact in friendly and antagonistic relationships that exhibit the delicate balance of nature.Sinnoh: religion/mythologyThe three starters' final evolutions all reference real world myths and legends: Torterra represents the world turtle, Empoleon references Poseidon with its trident-shaped crown, and Infernape is based on the Monkey King, Sun Wukong. The name of the Sinnoh region denotes "mysteries" (神奥), in reference to the rich mythology of the region. There's also, of course, the detailed myths relating to Arceus, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Uxie, Azelf, and Mesprit. Canalave City's library keeps record of the many legends of the region. Non-legendary Pokemon in Sinnoh also have ties to religion and/or myths: Drifloon is said to vanish children, and an old folktale calls it a "Signpost for Wandering Spirits"; Spiritomb, for example, said to be composed of 108 spirits, likely references a Japanese Buddhist New Year's tradition of ringing a bell 108 times. It may also reference the first chapter of one of China's Four Great Classical Novels, wherein a foolish army marshal orders the removal of a stone monument and in doing so releases the spirits of 108 demons;Several towns in Sinnoh preserve old myths: Celestic town, which is said to have existed since Sinnoh was created, has an ancient shrine and a cave painting that details the legend of the lake guardians; Eterna City features a statue of Dialga/Palkia; Snowpoint Temple is home to Regigigas, who has legends about it towing continents with ropes as well as creating the Regi trio; Floaroma Town has a legend about how it was barren until Shaymin blessed the land there. Legends say that Spear Pillar is where Arceus created Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, and the land of Sinnoh itself.Unova: oppositesGen V explores the differences and relationships between opposites, such as nature and industry or humans and Pokemon. The cover legends for Black and White, Reshiram and Zekrom, are based on Yin and Yang, which are opposites. The introduction of locations such as Black City/White Forest, whose design and functions depend on the version being played, portray the theme of opposites by comparing nature to human industry. Incidentally, the Swords of Justice represent this difference in their goal of preventing Pokemon from losing their natural habitats to human industrialization.Team Plasma wants to separate humans and Pokemon. N's thinking could be seen as "black and white" if you consider this quote: "Many different values mix together, and the world becomes gray... That is unforgivable! I will separate Pokémon and people, and black and white will be clearly distinct!"Kalos: beautyThe Kalos region is based on France, which the Japanese have an idyllic view of for some reason (see: Paris syndrome). The name "Kalos" comes from the Greek word κάλλος, meaning beauty.Pokemon X and Y mark the first time players could customize the style and colour of their hair, skin, eyes, and clothing. Also, many of Lumiose City's functions are accessible based on the player's "style" rating.Sycamore was the OG hottie professor. Champion Diantha was based on the beautiful Audrey Hepburn, known for charming her way out of confrontations with WWII German troops while carrying Allied papers back and forth. Lysandre's plan with Team Flare and the ultimate weapon revolves entirely around his twisted ideas of beauty. via /r/pokemon http://ift.tt/2nn7InW
