"Genuinely curious: How can people like Gen 1 and 2 over Gen 3 and 4?"
It just seems strange to me. Outside of nostalgia Gen 1 just looks outdated. From not being able to run, the clunky menu and PC system, and the wide variety of game problems that are too numerous, so I will link a list: http://ift.tt/2rzDlR2 The worst offenders in my opinion is how useless Ghost type is, critical hits dependent on speed, the OP psychic type, and the Dragon type having literally only one move (Dragon Rage). On the other hand, Gen 3 with Firered and Leafgreen seem almost like a straight upgrade. It incorporates the Dark and Steel types into combat; making it more varied and making Charmander significantly less useless early game, it was overall faster with the newer engine and run button, the graphics were crisp for a Gameboy game, it's free of all the menu problems Gen 1 had (and all of them, actually) It had many more features, especially in the aftergame, and finally is more balanced in terms of types (Psychic isn't OP, Ghost actually means something against Psychic types for example)Then, on to Gen 2; while not bad in the slightest, it also had a few problems such as the menu system. With gen 4 and Heartgold and Soulsilver, Gamefreak presented what in my opinion, is the greatest remake so far. It kept everything that made Gen 2 great, including the charm and feel of the region, and added many, MANY great features, such as access to over 400 pokemon, speed, touch screen capabilities that made the game even better to play (especially with one hand), a Safari Zone, berries, the Pokeathlon, the Pokewalker, graphics that were great for a DS game, and an even more expanded aftergame that includes the Battle Frontier. It also had many gameplay upgrades, such as including Diamond and Pearl's physical/special split, which made battling more dynamic, overall better TMs, and was faster. The only problem I have with this remake is that it removed the Game Corner for a stupid Minesweeper rip off, which wasn't nearly as fun to horse around in.Maybe I'm missing something here, but in general Gen 4 and Gen 3 seem to have the preferrable Kanto and Johto games. via /r/pokemon http://ift.tt/2qg3O2c
