"At what point do you give up trying to catch a pokemon?"

#PokemonGO: I was trying to catch a 306 CP Chikorita so I used a Pinap berry and a great ball to catch it because I don't have the third evolution for this pokemon. It didn't work, so I tried again. Pinap + great ball. No dice. I then used 4 ultra balls and 4 razz berries to try and catch it and finally got it. If I knew what a pain it was going to be, I would've walked away. I kept saying "I already used so many items, it would be a waste to give up.."At what point do you just stop and walk away, leaving the pokemon behind? I feel like a damn fool. I wasted 4 ultra balls, 2 great balls, 2 pinaps and 2 razz berries for that low CP Chikorita.
