"The Joy of Sharing Pokemon with a Child"

My daughter is 7 years old and has been really slow to learn to read. I've been playing Pokemon Go with her since last year and she's really into it, so I twigged on the idea of using Pokemon to trick her into learning to read.I bought her a second hand DS and a copy of LeafGreen. I've explained the basics of how to play, but told her that she's going to have to read for herself to understand the moves and the stories. She's still skipping most of the dialogue, but she's actively struggling through reading the move descriptions so she can decide the best moves for her pokemon. It's wonderful. She's fighting the second gym as we speak, with a team consisting of Wartortle, Pidgey, Caterpie, Pikachu, Mankey, and Clefairy.EDIT: Her Wartortle is level 24 and her Caterpie is level 4. I've tried to explain the idea of spreading the XP around, but it's falling on deaf ears. She mostly just uses Wartortle, Pikachu, and Pidgey.EDIT #2: Second gym is defeated. Do not underestimate an overleveled Wartortle with Bite.EDIT #3: I actually bought her this book last month in order to have something that she actively wanted to read with me. And I think it's pretty great that "psychic" and "dragon" are among the first English words she can read by sight. via /r/pokemon http://ift.tt/2soRzRg
