"Why is everyone just NOW getting sick of event Pokémon?"

I get that event Pokémon were always controversial, and while Dusk Form Lycanroc being event-exclusive isn't enough for me to pre-order the game until more info comes out, I'm not sure why it's just NOW that people are exploding over event Pokémon. Pokémon exclusive to events has been a thing since forever, and it seems like it's now that it's the breaking point for a number of people.
