"Yes, life is unfair, but Niantic doesn't need to EXACERBATE the inequities of real life, even in an AR game"
#PokemonGO: I just watched trainer tips latest video that got a shit ton of downvotes and here's why he is tone deaf on this issue. Yes, of course dude life is unfair and people who live in rural areas miss out on big city "real life" events like Broadway plays or sports games or whatever. But Niantic doesn't necessarily need to go out of its way to make the game exacerbate the inequities of Real Life. What they're doing with these events is simply poor game design that is going to piss off a lot of players. We saw that the event in Japan had MASSIVE spawns of a ton of rare, highly sought-after pokemon like the starters, Larvitar, Unknown, etc. Hell, I live in a big city and I've never even seen a wild Larvitar. Niantic gave a massive advantage to people who arbitrary happen to live near the event site in which this ridiculous spawn buff took place. Aside from the poor game design fact that this spawn buff was OP (even for a special event), Niantic didn't have to just limit it to a small group of players who happen to be in one pinpoint location in the world. They could have made the special spawns and shiney pikachu spawns appear all over the world and still branded it as the pikachu outbreak or whatever. Hell, they could have even just made a special "Pikachu Outbreak Event Incense" in the shop for a few hundred coins so players everywhere else in the world could have at least 30 minutes of the great spawns and celebrate the event globally. But no, Niantic went out of its way to make this OP event exclusive, thereby EXACERBATING the inequities of real life (where people live and travel constraints).Imagine if they released Mewtwo raids all over the world at the same time, with the same difficult catch rate for everyone. THAT would have been truly exciting to see who the first people would be to catch it. Instead, we got to watch a select group of people who mostly happen to live near some event (in addition to some youtubers who have it in with Niantic) sit in fucking seats, do absolutely nothing, and have their 100% catch rate Mewtwo handed to them. How exiting. /sPokemon Go is an AR game where location and community are important, so live events can be a big plus. But the way Niantic is going about these events so far just poor game design, plain and simple. They're alienating a huge portion of their users for literally no reason, and they're going to lose people (and MONEY) as a result. @Niantic if you're reading this: did you see my event incense idea above? You would have made a killing off that. You make no money from people buying plane tickets to fly across the globe to your little exclusive destination event. Use your brains, or hire me as a consultant lmao. via /r/pokemongo http://ift.tt/2w4o8cO
