"Mom needs some help becoming a Pokemon Master"
#PokemonGO: My mom, recently retired, just downloaded Pokemon Go last week in the hope that it would get her out and walking more. My husband and I walked her through the basics over the weekend, she picked them up pretty quickly and is up to level 9 or 10 now.My instinct was to let her explore the game on her own and have fun with it, and introduce her to the finer points of strategy and mechanics over time as she gets comfortable with the game. She has virtually no experience with mobile or PC games beyond Bejeweled and FreeCell, so she definitely can get overwhelmed if we throw too much at her.On the other hand, I was super into Pokemon as a kid, so she has much more background in how it works than the average newbie. She also is very tech-capable, an early adopter of the iPhone and perfectly comfortable figuring out the interface of a new app. She's also a very strategic thinker, and she's very aware that what she's currently doing in the game is not "optimal" from a strategic standpoint, because she sees the holes in her knowledge base whenever she makes a decision. She really wants to learn the details, but she doesn't have enough context to know what questions to ask other than "what am I doing wrong?" to which the answer is often "nothing, there's just also other things."I'd like to send her some resources that she can explore in her own time, to learn some of those other things in a not-overwhelming way. Unfortunately, I don't think she has enough of a gaming background to get any value out of, say, exploring The Silph Road website, but she's definitely well past the "Pokemon Go For Newbies" articles I've found. So, does anyone know of (or is anyone working on) a strategy guide that you think is particularly accessible to a gaming newbie, but goes beyond the really first level basics aimed at people who have zero context for Pokemon as a thing? Do you have any particular pieces of advice that you think would be a good starting point for her? Any favorite "first principles" that you like to offer when asked for help? Any resources at all would be a big help! Ideally this would something that I can send to her remotely, as I live several hours away and can only spend time with her in-person every couple of months.TL;DR: retired mom who is strategic-minded, a tech pro, and parent of a gamer needs some strategy help that is accessible to non-gamers but assumes more basic knowledge than your average "entirely new to Pokemon" guide does.EDIT: Thanks everyone for your help! This is exactly the kind of stuff she's looking for, and exactly the stuff I was having a hard time coming up with since I just kind of muddled through in a pretty non-optimal way...she's totally going to leave me in the dust now, I'll freely admit it. via /r/TheSilphRoad http://ift.tt/2xy3Yoo
