"Some Things I Noticed/Learned About the Ultra Recon Squad that Drives in How Great Their Designs Are"
So I’ll start by saying that I really liked the Recon Squad from the get-go, and the more I learned about them the more I liked. The more I found that I liked, the closer I looked into things to see what else I could learn and, well, the circle continued as such. I wanted to share what I’ve come across so far with you guys into one compiled list, and hopefully some of it are things you guys hadn’t thought about, too. :)Because there’s so much to cover, I’m splitting it into two segments: Design and Behavior.Design:First off, their names. The majority of Alolans are named after plants, whereas three of the four Recon Squad are all named after algae. A lot of algae does very well in low-light environments, especially red algae, which is what Dulse and Soliera are named after.Corrected by u/sevipers - Zossie, however, is named after Zostera Marina, a seagrass, which as a plant proper reinforces Zossie being the most different of the group, and arguably the most "normal."So this next thing is actually the most obvious, but since I’m doing a comprehensive list I figured I’d state it, anyway. They’re all very light-skinned and eyed because of the lack of natural light in their homeworld… along a similar design feature I noticed that the colors of their pupils seem to match the color of their hair. They take off their visors/masks (which remind me of eclipse glasses) only when inside buildings (ie Aether Paradise) apart from when in their homeworld. In addition, their helmets have little visors of their own, presumably to keep sunlight from hitting their face directly. I imagine they burn quite easily.Okay now that we’re beyond those, the somewhat less-obvious stuff. I actually didn’t notice this until someone pointed it out, which is shocking because I’m left-handed, but most if not all of them are left-handed. We know for sure Soliera and Dulse are since they throw their Beast Balls with their left, but we also see Phyco stroke his moustache with his left. I imagine in the Ultra Megalopolis, it’s probably as rare to be right-handed as it is to be left-handed on Earth!Going along with that, whether it’s an intentional design choice or not, as a proud lefty, I’m also left-eye dominant. (yes this is relevant I swear). Anyway, because of this I have always parted my hair to the right, since having something covering my dominant eye is annoying - which we see Soliera do as well.Behavior:Now the most obvious behavioral differences here range from their “square” rendition of the Alolan rainbow greeting, to their grammatical butchering of the greeting itself. Beyond that, though, there are some pretty clever things Game Freak decided to include that aren’t as clear. They are directly stated as being new to battling, and this becomes really, really apparent with how easy their fights are. There are some specific (and very entertaining) reasons for why they’re so terrible at battling though:Their Pokemon have exactly the last 4 moves that they learned by level-up. There is no thought or strategy or choice put into their movesets, they just run under the assumption that the most recent move that the Pokemon learned must be better than whatever they had previously. They also have no held items, which, while not necessarily uncommon, still kinda reinforces this. It’s especially apparent with Poipole - whom they consider themselves more familiar with - even though they don’t seem to know how to evolve him because they never keep/tutor dragon pulse on him. It’s also why their Poipole has a terrible set up, running Nasty Plot with only physical moves. Also, they drop hilariously low amounts of money, since I imagine they didn’t exactly come from the Megalopolis with much expendable cash.Edited to add in other users' keen-eyed additions!Pointed out by u/Ahelex - Their battle throwing style is more mechanical and angular, unlike the smooth default throws of the player character.Pointed out by u/CountScarlioni - Reinforcing their admittance that they resolve their problems with science and tech, they use X items in battle to compensate for their lack of battling skill.Pointed out by u/sevipers - Algae are also considered an invasive species in Hawaii, to the degree of being referred to as "alien." In addition, the Squad's blue skin tone / purplish tongues and interior mouthes could be due to a lack of oxygen caused by no photosynthesis, causing cyanosis.Pointed out by u/RadiReturns - They appear to take longer/slower strides when walking, which could imply a difference in gravitational force between Alola and Ultra Megalopolis.Bonus: Is anyone else super amazed that they caught a Furfrou in a Beast Ball?Second Bonus because one isn't enough:Ultra MegalopolisIt looks like all of the prisms atop the buildings are there to capture the light coming off of Megalo Tower, with the building faces also aiding in bouncing light off to keep the city illuminated as efficiently as possible. The artificial lighting should also help with heating the exterior of what I would assume is a very cold city. Also, in game to the left of the city entrance is what appears to be a city map, with Megalo Tower snugly in the center.Anyway, I know this was a lot, but I hope at least some of you guys found it interesting! :) Did I miss anything that you guys picked up on? Or is there something in my list that I'm misinformed about / overlooked? via /r/pokemon http://ift.tt/2DNvoyC
