"Today I fell in love with all the non-straightforward moves that I always ignored growing up"

I've only ever played pokemon red and its remake, fire red, but did so quite a bit growing up.So now years later I decided to have a play through with some pokemon I never use normally, so I beat the elite 4 with just venusaur, golbat, and arcanine (and the re-match with golbat -> crobat + steelix added in) - first time playing without psychic, electric, or ice)This time around I finally realized that I fucking love the somewhat inaccurate "all-in" moves like overheat and hyper beam. It might be obvious to a lot of you but it was awesome having this realization. Like many others I see, I always hated all those moves because my thinking was simple:Flamethrower: 95 power, 100% accuracyOverheat: 140 power, 90% accuracy, so on average 126 power, but then you're super weak after...not worth it, plus missing occasionally totally sucks!Similarly with hyper beam or frenzy plant, why the hell would I use a move that sometimes misses and where I lose a turn? In my mind, that 150 power was really 75 (since you lose a turn) * 90% accuracy = 68, which is garbage! But here's the thing - if you can one-shot your enemies, recharges and stat losses mean absolutely nothing, just switch your damn pokemon after! Not only that, but mathematically I had the wrong way of thinking too - overheat is obviously being used by a fire pokemon, so with STAB the flamethrower comparison is really 143 vs 210 - that has huuuuge implications in a level 60 vs level 60 battle.I remember Tyranitar, Lapras, and Dragonite were absolute nightmares, no matter what "super effective" thing I used, they'd survive, screw me over, then get potion'd to full health again, especially on the rematch when everyone you face has earthquake. This time I waltzed in and one shotted that Tyrantitar with my "naive" (not ideal) Venasaur, who's EVs I never paid attention to, and laughed, out loud, as his health slowly went to 0. Oh no, now I have to recharge! No biggie, just say "yes" to switching your pokemon, throw a golbat out there and throw a confusion ray (you'll always go first with golbat/crobat).Equally important, they are just way cooler moves, visually and audibly. Peace. via /r/pokemon http://ift.tt/2ED4LZ2
