"Updating Spawn Points and Cell Phone Data Usage"
#PokemonGO: A tiny bit of context: I'm currently based in the capital city of Myanmar, in South-East Asia. There's a small Pokémon GO community here, and while you don't really see people out on the streets playing all that often there's still an ok sized player base.Playing here is not easy though. Pokestops are far and few between. I live in one of the most densely populated areas of the city, in between one of the universities and multiple other large inner-city neighbourhoods. We have 3 pokestops and one gym within a 1km radius, and only a small number of spawn points. This is the same across most of the city. Now, based on my understanding that spawn points etc. we're at least partially based on cell phone data use at time of launch, this makes sense. Myanmar's only recently got affordable SIM cards (before 2015 SIM cards literally cost on average 100USD), and the mobile data market took a while to come into place. Now the situation is radically different, Myanmar is one of the only countries in the world where the majority of the population access internet almost solely through their phones. Mobile data is now ubiquitous here.In this case, then, there is an argument for a reassessment of cell phone data usage, and a (hopefully) resulting increase in spawns/pokestops/gyms. While it's true that there is to some extent an active player base here, the absence of stops and large spawn-point deserts have led many to start spoofing. I see more and more screenshots popping up on local social media groups of spoofed locations, with people happy that they've finally been able to catch stuff that's not even particularly uncommon elsewhere. In neighbouring Bangkok it's the polar opposite, there's Pokémon literally everywhere. I got my first legendary at a raid there, where more than 30 people on their lunch break turned up.A few people have tried updating OSM, and interestingly there's quite a few Ingress portals around that are completely absent in PoGo (one recently finished shopping mall has 10 portals and 1 pokestop). There doesn't seem to have been any impact on spawns, though, with many parks still containing large dead zones despite being marked as such on OSM.I'm sure that this isn't just an issue in Myanmar, and may even be an issue in more rural parts of richer nations too. I know at least for the community here itwould make a radical difference in how we engage with the game, and may even lead to a reduction in spoofers.Do you reckon there's any chance for something like this? Have I totally missed the mark in my assumptions of how spawms were calculated? via /r/TheSilphRoad https://ift.tt/2KdjRIv
