"What’s the point of having a good gym defender?"

#PokemonGO: I see people talk about “that would be a good gym defender” like it matters. I just started playing again after a 2 year hiatus and I’m struggling to find the purpose of gyms. You collect your 50 coins when your defender gets knocked so wouldn’t it make more sense to just use a crappy mon and be done with it? What benefit does defending a gym give?
